Friend Of Mine Swears By The "Lollar" Pickups!

Re: Friend Of Mine Swears By The "Lollar" Pickups!

i just recently tried a set of his tweed (is that right?) strat pups. seemed like a pretty underwound pup set, not bad but not my thing. the neck was chimey and sounded really nice but the set as a whole didnt do much for me. the bridge didnt seem like it was much if any hotter than the other pups so what sounded bright and clean in the neck sounded down right thin and weak in the bridge. the notch positions were really quacky but still a little weak and thin.
the middle pup by itself wasnt bad, nice character to the tone and i like my middle pups to be thinner and brighter than the rest so i can always get a gain drop by going there. if i was going to get a set of lollar strat pups i might use the tweed middle pup but the neck coulda been a little hotter and the bridge was way too underwound for my taste. not sure what the resistance of these pups were but they sure sounded like they were under 6k.

im sure he must make hotter models and im not sure where these fit in his line, hopefully they are the weakest cause i cant imagine any one wanting anything weaker.

the only other lollar pup ive heard was a dog ear p90 in the bridge of a lp jr and it sounded great. dude was only playing slide on it but it was a really nice tone thru the blonde bassman he was using

Yeah...the Tweeds are pretty weak, they are alnico II magnets and the neck is around 4.85k and the bridge is around 5.35k, I have heard that they sound pretty quacky but not very good through anything except a cranked tweed amp...he has several Strat sets, Tweed, Blackface, Blond then the Lollar Special S series...but he will pretty much wind whatever you want. I have talked with Jason twice and I have to say again, he is a hell of a nice guy.

About 2 weeks ago I installed a set of Lollar P90's into my PRS SE Soapbar II guitar and this is fast becoming my favorite guitar for two reasons. The playability and now because of the tone. The SE is the first P90 equipt guitar that I've owned so I'll admit that the whole P90 thing is still a bit new to me. The guitar came equipt with Duncans but I don't know if they were a regular production model or a Duncan designed. What ever they just did'nt cut it for me.
Actually, those were not Duncan pickups in that guitar. The USA-made PRS guitars use Seymour Duncan P-90s. The Korean-made PRS guitars use a Korean pickup that we have nothing to do with.

But as to the original subject, I know Jason and his wife. Jason and I did a presentation to the Pacific Northwest Chapter of AES a year or so ago. He's a cool guy and he knows a lot about pickups.

I haven't personally played his pickups, but I have no doubt that he makes top notch stuff. I can sum up Jason in three words, "He Gets It."

I Must say that I've always been very happy with my SD pickups, especially the Antiquity series...I really don't think it gets any better than these..

I played a Strat once with a P-90 is the bridge...it was pretty bad ass!

There seems to be a dearth of info on P-90's and strats on the intarweb. Most of what I've found has been positive. Made me wonder why the strat and P90 combo is not done more often. Suppose I'll find out soon enough...

Re: Friend Of Mine Swears By The "Lollar" Pickups!

The stock pickups in the PRS SE are'nt Duncans? Are you sure? Well, all I know is what I was told. I say that because when I was making inquiries to pickup manufacturer's about some suitable replacement pickups I wrote to a Duncan tech and he told me that they WERE Duncans! He did tell me what models they were but I can't remember which ones. Like I said, I'm just going by what I was told by a Duncan tech.

Re: Friend Of Mine Swears By The "Lollar" Pickups!

VP trumps tech.

I love the Antiquity Tele and HB pickups, as well as the other SD pickups I've used, but I'd consider trying a set of Lollars for some variety.
