how do you figure? since bridge pickups are wound more than neck pickups. it would only be fatter. the PG+ has an A5 and may be too bright for your tastes, but i doubt it. keep in mind, the PG+ only comes in parchment. so you'll probably want to cover it.

I figure cause ive owned both and the bridge is brighter than the neck that simple. The PGb is a surprisingly bright pickup.

Have you read his posts? he thinks a PAF Pro is too bright. A PG+ is just as bright if not brighter.

yea. in that case i'd say put an A2 in a PG+, since it's darker than a regular PGb with an A2.

Why the frack must he mag swap when he can just buy a PGn!!!! :butkick: Please tell me what is wrong with using the PGn over a mag swapped PG+? Which some people will tell you is the exact same pickup minus the magnet so in effect he would be making a PGb if he put an A2 in it. Ive never verified this they might have further differences but please tell me why these are so much better than just using a stock PGn! :smack:

I guess, I've read half of this forum topics already :bigeyes: What I've learned is that PGb seems shrilly for some people - not only the wounding is the issue.

because the PGn probably wont be hot enough to be a good balance for a custom or DD if he's playing high gain. personally, the BB3 is a great match for my custom 8, and i'm not having any feedback problems with it being unpotted.

He said he wants good clean tones on the neck so he isnt going to want it hot anyways. Even then if you adjust the pickup heights a SH5 will balance just fine with a PGn.

well it does cleans gloriously. so go for it, but i personally like a hotter neck PAFish pickup even for cleans.

Hello guys!


I mostly play (at least I try to play ) Metallica, Slayer i.e. thrash metal. Sometimes I'd like to play Satriani or Buckethead. And I want to have a good clean too - I love to play zero-gain passages on my neck pickup. BTW, I mostly play rhythm on the bridge and solos and clean stuff on the neck pickup.

Here is some advice, you're trying to cover a lot of ground sonically. So im gonna be as helpful as possible. From what you described, even though metallica and slayer both use EMG'S now they havent always, and now im sure as rain no matter what the literature says they still do in the studio and for certain live songs. With that being said the EMG X series comes pretty darn close to the active/ passive gap, im not saying its the be all end all, but you might want to consider a EMG 60X/81X set.

Now on to passives the Santriani and buckethead, is a entire different beast, I am sure you know the professor uses paf pros and his mojo's, while bucketheads pups are custom secret sauce from Dimarzio no matter what gibson says or puts in his les paul model.

With all this being taken into account and also probably considering you have a high gain amp , you won't need a lot of extra sizzle from your pup's

im gonna recommend either a Jb or full shred in the bridge and a jazz or a seth lover in the neck. Thats my 3 cents from what you said about what you play and want to hear. I hope it's helpful

Thanks! That was some new info for me - I've thought that Buckethead used traditional Gibson pup combo.
As for EMGX, I've read their sound is really close to Blackouts, I guess, I just don't like this uber-output...
And I kinda 've made my mind and 've ordered SH-5 and SHPG-1n.

SH5, thick, chunky, yet can do cleans well. You won't be dissapointed. The neck your describing to me is the Jazz. Great cleans, not too thick or muddy, and that also translates into great tones for fast shred type leads.

I've tried the AHB1 and the EMGX-81 and they are not even close. The Blackout has so much more output and gain that my picking dynamics were getting lost. The 81X has a nice balance between active/passive and also has a very useable clean tone as ell.

There is no real trick to the X series EMGs they are the old preamp just with 6db less gain.

I had AHB-1 Blackouts in my maple neck/rosewood fretboard/poplar wings electric guitar. Very clear, high output pickups good for thrashin but not much else IMO.

I recently switched to a Duncan Distortion Trembucker (TB-6 bridge) & a Duncan 59 (SH-1 neck) with premium CTS pots (500K w/ 1% Tolerance) and Sprague Orange Drop (.022uF) Caps.

The difference was night and day. I can still thrash with the bridge. Very clear, rich tone. A tad on the bright side (probably the caps but ok with me, I just adjust the eq on the amp). I play with ALOT of gain and the TB-6 is very articulate. However my lead tones are much more to my liking. The AHB-1 just had that thin, wailing lead tone IMO. The 59 can do ANYTHING the TB-6 can't. Clean/acoustic, blues, etc. And the 59 sounds amazing when shredding with alot of gain.

I am so happy I made the switch. I cant imagine any other setup being better suited to my needs. Highly Recommended!

I would go with the already mentioned DD in the bridge, i play thrash & it's been my go to pickup for the last 17 years. If you liked the Blackout have you thought about getting BMP-1, i have that paired with a JB in the bridge & it's a killer combo.

I haven't and I actually didn't like the actives' both clean and mid-distorted tones - for me they have a lack of dynamics no matter what the promotional reviews say. I've already ordered Custom, but maybe later, if I'm not satisfied, I'll certainly go with Distortion

DuncanDistortion is the cat's pajamas for metal. Especially for Slayer Metallica and such. IMHO. I really like the Distortion neck too.
