From Garage Band to Cubase AI

Now I've been using garage band on my little mac for a few months now.
It's not a great bit of software, but it is easy and intuitive to use and for setting up drum tracks, audio tracks etc you can't complain too much.
Ok it's a little simplistic, I'm not convinced it sounds that good, and for some reason if I undo, or save it makes all my tracks disappear off the screen, which is a pain.
So I've decided to get Cubase up and running. In comparison it's like trying to fly the space shuttle solo when you're only flying experience was launching your BMX off a home made ramp.
It really is complex.
Once again the thing that is confusing me is the VST instruments (the reason I gave up on it before).
I now have a USB piano keyboard (that both bit's of software recognise) and all I need do is assign the midi track I'm working on a drum kit, or possible a Hammond type sound, and I'll have cracked it. Perhaps it's today's sun but this simple process seems to be beyond me.
Why can't it be like garage band.
"I'd like a new track, virtual drum kit please?" and that's what ya get :)

Re: From Garage Band to Cubase AI

It's not too hard.
Menu>Devices>VST instruments(f11)

When the instrument tab opens it will be empty. Slick on the file box and select the vst instrument you want...Say, Groove Agent for the drum track.

It will ask you if you want to create a midi track for the instrument - Say yes - it will automatically open and configure a track for you with that instrument, and open the instrument interface window - should look like a little drum machine.
On the top window bar for the drum machine there is another black bar with the file box icon. Click on it and select load preset - it will then give you a list of the included drum kits. Select one, it will load the kit ,assign the samples to the virtual pads, and assign a midi key number to each sample - the midi key number is displayed on the pads for easy reference. When you hit the key assigned to the drum you want, you should hear the sound.

Give that a shot and see how it goes.

Cheers, although by the time I read this I'd accidentally got there anyway :)
