[edit]OK so it is probably a mid-80's - it is not a t-top and it is not a Shaw, though similar to both. This would have been the successor to the t-top, essentially the line going back to the original PAF's.

The original cover was removed to verify it wasn't a t-top but it can be put back on with the original solder quite easily. The cover is chrome, in good shape with some scratches, no rust but some tarnish on the sides. It has double black coils obviously, sounds very good, full and even, a typical Gibson PAF style pup with a bit of bite to it.

All older Gibson pups have a stamped number on them, 4th and 5th digit SHOULD give you a year of manufacture (at least that is how you date a T-Top). Are the poles all screws or half and half? As far as I know, the successor to the T-Top was the Dirty Fingers but I am no authority on Gibson pups geneology

The number stamped on the bottom is the patent # Gibson received for the humbucker (PAF became patented in other words), it has nothing to do with the date. If it was a t-top it would have had the "T" on the top of the bobbins. If it was a Shaw it would have had the info inked on the bottom this has neither but it has the same base plate.

The Dirty Fingers was a "hot" pickup Gibson offered, it was a standard pickup on the V, the Explorer and probably something else but it wasn't part of the traditional PAF lineage.

I only asked because the Dirty Fingers and Shaw's were offered in just about every Gibson guitar in the late 70s early 80s from the SG to Les Paul's. I also had a '78 Les Paul Custom w/ T-tops straight from the factory. The '78 Les Paul Standard I also had came w/ Shaw pups so I am trying to figure out what the pup is. It must be a '77 or prior

These were used between 75 & 82.

Dirty Fingers were only offered in a few models, I am not sure about the Shaw's.

You should have said "inked" not "stamped".

Usually the ink rubs off.



Not late 70's, my 77 Custom still had T-Tops. Probably mid 80s.

Actually you are probably right my mistake t-top swere still going until the early 80's, so be it it is likely a mid 80's Gibson pup.

I have an '86 SG and this pickup sounds exactly like the ones in mine. FWIW, both the bridge and neck pups are the same, and are the best sounding neck pickups I've found yet. Someone should give this a go in the neck slot.
