Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I think mine are on the way too - there's a pending charge on my credit card, I just can't tell what for yet. It's roughly the right amount though.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I just got a call a few minutes ago from MJ letting me know my Fuglybucker is ready! :)

SD headquarters is just 5 miles from my house, so I'm going out to pick up my pickup in person!

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

That is strange and I see what you are talking about in blakejcan's post where he has a picture of the bobbins. It only looks like the off-center one is the one in the foreground which I assume is the neck model? The one pictures in the background looks like it is centered evenly. Scott Olsen's pic in the first post on page one looks like it is centered evenly as well. Maybe a few off-center Fuglybuckers made it through. Makes it more appropriate for it's namesake I would think. I"m usually OCD about things like this, but if I get a ugly duck off center one I will probably cherish it even more. We shall see.

I'd have to pull the tape to see how the bar bobbin is attached, but I suspect it's just hot glued on.
I'm hoping to get these installed by this weekend, if I can.

One thing I noticed, and it's only because I'd forgotten that these were Trembuckers and the 24-fret Agile I bought specifically to test these in is Gibson spaced. Doh.
The bobbins aren't lined up along the center, but along the left edge. (see pic)
Just curiosity on my part, but I'm hoping someone from the Custom Shop can provide an explanation if it was deliberate or if this was just a production decision.
Understandable, given the the Frankensteinian conception process. :)

Looking at this thing just reminds me of the Robot Chicken intro... IT LIVES!!!
lol

Totally cool.

I'll ask Derek when I see him - that original picture was the first prototype and there was quite a few tests and tweaks after that.

Thanks Scott.
It seems deliberate as it does this for both pups.
I'm just curious as to the reasoning.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

The Fuglys are beautiful.

I received mine earlier, and had to drop them into my Les Paul Studio. It was stuck in the closet for a while, burdened by the albatross of stock 490/498s, so the before/after isn't worth describing. First impressions: I can say these are some fantastic pickups MJ put together. Their sound is like taking the the vintage range pickups, dialing down the treble a touch to sweeten it up, and then giving a touch more oomph in the low end. They have a nice "pop" or "snap" to the as well. The neck pickup really hits the crazy specs we generated. I love a neck pickup that I can get pinch harmonics with. They're very clear and crisp, even will what some people might call "silly" amounts of distortion.

FWIW, I installed mine bars-out, PA-in, since I might put a Silverbird between them (and then I can do fun coil-stealing stuff and keep the PA/bar combo).

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I am building a les paul around it. completely idiotic of course, but still... what do you guys think of this set in a les paul with a flamed spalted koa top on a singlepiece lightweight mahogany and an indian RW neck shaft with an ebony board?

Looks like a blend of bright-ish tonewoods... if the Fuglybucker set is a smooth as I think it is, it should be an excellent match to the chosen tonewoods.

If not, there should be a tone control somewhere ln the guitar... I think?

Just pulling your leg, orpheo. ;)

Weird. I wonder what's up with that.

I am experiencing a major case if deja vu. Someone said almost the exact same thing to me last night on facebook. But he aint italian! Nor named pepe. So I wonder. Why do you think its bright? Mahogany and rosewood are considered warm and koa is like mahogany.

But I am sure it will sound good. Have a koa/mahogany/purpleheart/ebony lp with a distortion/fullshred hybrid in both positions and that combination is not really overly trebly.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I received my pickups yesterday and they are closer to the picture on the right. I think you got a one-off or something MojoMonster.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

My morning just got a whole lot fuglier.

Unfortunately I'll have to wait till after work to install it.

PS- My pickup is aligned evenly.

The guitar won't be bright. I have a singlecut PRS with a mahogany body/maple top, full rosewood neck and an ebony board. The ebony definitely increases attack and percussiveness, but the overall tonality is big, full and warm; although clear! Those are great tonewoods Orpheo; should be a really cool build! I will say this: I own 3 rosewood necked guitars and tonally they are pretty different than your standard 'hog or maple necked versions. Just keep in mind that the low to low-mid emphasis you get from a full rosewood neck also changes optimal pickup choice (for ME anyway!).

I believe Kojak was making a joke there, hence the "just pulling your leg."

I have 5 rosewood necks but it was lr kojaks remark combined with a comment I heard yesterday that caught me off guard. Thats all.

Oh, don't mind me, man. I'm just thinking about the few guitars I've assembled with Warmoth parts were a bit on the bright side, that's all.

But as you actually own far more guitars made from Warmoth parts than I've ever assembled in thirteen years, I tend to believe that you're probably right and I'm most probably dead wrong. ;)

And I'm not on facebook either.

What can I say? Great minds think alike... or so they say. ;)

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

Well... I'm not afraid it will sound too bright. the neck is an inch thick with a nut 1 3/4 inch wide... if that won't howl, I don't know what will.
