Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

Not a big contribution, but I got mine in the mail this week. Here's the before...

...and the after.

I wish I could comment on the sound, but they're not even soldered in yet. I just put them in physically. Hopefully tomorrow, or by the weekend at the latest. But they really don't look bad, especially since this is the first time I've had a set of pickups in the guitar that match. And the bobbins line up perfectly.

Dr. Barlo, this is for you.

With flash off it does seem more matte than the earlier pic.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

K thanks Scott, I sort of figured it was sandblasted, since it wasn't overly glossy. Did the ones we all received get less sandblasting than the original prototype of the matte bobbin though?

No, we think it just got a little wax on the bobin which is why the original pic may show it a little less glossy. I'll see if we can't get a new picture sometime soon.

The ordering period is still open until 1/15/13.

Thanks Scott!! I was thinking it ended 12/15 and have been stressed I wouldnt get in on time. All my $ is tied up in paypal..

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I really meant to do some recording with it so far, but that guitar is in E and everything I've recorded in the last month is not. Sorry. It'll happen, and when it does I'll post it here. Maybe my pick for next week's riff game will be in standard.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I think I might be getting a guitar to put these, now I am even more eager to see the charge on my card than before...

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

sound clips anyone??
I was wondering if these Fuglies, since they are A2's and have a resistance of 8-8.5K , sound close to the Slash set or maybe even PG's??

The first post has a bunch of different sound clips.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

Got mine not long ago and installed it in my Blackjack. It's absolutely outstanding. Completely blew me away. As far as clarity and definition, dynamics and headroom, versatility and most of all TONE I almost feel all my other pickups are going to have a hard time keeping up. It looks absolutely killer.

I love the exclusive feeling of having a bro only bucker that is completely ideal for me especially after being one since my early teens, even playing live on stage with the man himself!

I will definitely do that video demo I've always wanted to do with this pickup!

I sent an email to MJ to order one but haven't heard back. Probably try the custom shop email. Don't want to miss the deadline. This pickup may be perfect for my current project.

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I set an order for january as well and have not heard back quite yet, but I imagine that's just the custom shop schedule.

Its that good huh?? what makes it so? is it responsive to volume rolls? I want one, but it would really be a financial hardship. I DEF cant afford the set. You talkin the the bridge position right? thanks

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I provided a couple of clips of the Fugly Buckers and some other pickups.

Please study the README in the directory first and see whether it's useful. You can either download the zipfile with everything or there is an unpacked/ subdirectory with the content of the zipfile so that you can cherry-pick. You probably want to save to disk first and then listen, not re-retrieve each clip 50 times. I'm not youtube :)

If you prefer to have a subset in a zipfile let me know and I can make one.

Yeah bridge position. It's incredibly responsive to volume rolls, you could be on the most saturated channel you've got and have it do clear cleans then crank it all the way to swe-death sludge. When you split the coils it has an awesome spank to it on clean and is very biting and chewy yet somehow still smooth for leads (think a single coil Super Distortion) and paired with a split coil from the neck pickup has an unmistakable iconic 50s blues sound.

This pickup is ridiculously good and the guitar it's in is a match made in heaven. I'm currently in the process of working out similar balances with my 12 or so other axes so I won't be disappointed when I switch over!

My first clip with the Fugly-

While this was done very quickly, the fugly punch is still there. Its that weird thing where its really thick and yet super punchy. I like it...in fact it may be the only thing keeping me from selling this guitar right now. haha

Re: Fugly Bucker - Come and Get it

I've played with the set for a bit now, and I'm pretty impressed. The bridge humbucker really has its own thing going on. It turns the volume knob into a time machine. When I roll it back, I get a more vintage feel. It's something you certainly wouldn't expect from looking at it. The looks put it straight in the modern category. And as you roll it forward, it starts to saturate yet maintain brilliant clarity. It doesn't push the amp nearly as hard as other pickups, and I think that's a benefit. It crunches and lets the amp put its own distortion on things without exerting its will over the preamp section too hard.

I realized I'm babbling here. The set seems very versatile, and it's not something you get the whole gist of in an hour of playing. Clean tones are phenomenal, and I think that's where they really shine best. I've tried to describe how they handle gain above, but I'm not sure any of it made sense on a second read. This might mean I have to try the Crazy 8 in my Les Paul now.
