Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

Just sharing for fun.

I was wondering what would happen if I made the recipe from hell: solid maple body, maple neck, floyd, jb/fullshred hybrid.

I feared a screechy, bright sound but it's not. It's ballsy with a nice top end, crunchy mids and a tight bass. Great true Stratty tones too

The right one is maple on ash. A lot heavier, in tone and weight. Both great. Which is your pick?!

Oh; and for laughs n giggles: a conundrum. What's going on here!?

Re: Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

I've got a "strat", maple center with poplar wings. Maple neck, rosewood board. Direct mount pickups (SSS). The stock pickups were G&B imports. The replacements are Alnico 5/2's (not Seymour Duncans). I'm not much of a strat guy but this one is "warmer" than a lot that I have played. I also have a cheap HSS. The single coils are direct mounted. It's a mahogany body with maple neck and board. The 5/2's were in that guitar as well. That one is a good bit brighter than the maple/poplar guitar. I guess you cant always go by the typical sonic descriptions of the wood type.

Nice looking guitars, as usual.

it's a combination of so many factors. right trem block, for instance, but also neck thickness and bolt on vs neckthru. fairly substantial :)

but... take a swing at that 3rd one. what do you think is happening with that one, spec/feature wise :D

Re: Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

I actually like a maple body and neck myself, and I also like Poplar bodies. There's so much generalization and bs out there regarding certain woods and how they will sound as opposed how they're likely to sound. I say rock on otherwise you'll never really know.
Lovely guitars btw, do you wear an extra wide strap for that 12lb little baby Jesus?

I like the left,,,,,spec-wise anyways. "give me floyd or give me death" lol

Re: Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

I'm surprised to hear that ash is heavier than maple. While I never doubted that the maple would sound good, I would expect the maple to be just heavy as balls.

Re: Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

If youre gonna go all the way, why no maple FB?

And maybe a maple 2x12 cab to go along with that

Re: Full maple strat vs maple+ash strat.

Funnily enough with the vintage spec strats I have, the full maple neck ones have less of that grating upper mids that the r/w fretboard ones possess.

Of course this is in no way scientific as the shaft wood has not been precisely the same. I have however swapped necks between guitars to further reinforce the shaky science with the same general tonal response.

Well the full-maple does have more wood removed for the floyd-routing,,,,,but then again I doubt it makes a 2-3LB difference,,,,,,must be heavy ash on the right.

My full-maple w/ebony Carvin st300 neck-thru (floyd and dual-bucker routes) only weighs-in at about 10LBS, with the 25" scale, thin-neck option, full tung-oil finish,,,,and Carvin's slimmer body-depth all contributing slightly to some weight-reduction.

Only 10 lbs...

I should stop being a cry baby about my 9lb Les Paul xD

Well, I'm probably missing something obvious, but you've doubled up with two blades in the bridge. What is the fretboard? Is it died/stained maple?
