Full Shreds magnet swaps?

hey everyone, i'm getting a new six string guitar soon, 26.2" scale length to be tuned around C and B. i love my Full Shred set on my current main guitar which i tune to D standard, i love the tightness in the low register, the smoothness when i go high on the fretboard, and the clarity throughout. i find the Full Shred set very versatile, though i intend to make my upcoming guitar a little more of a chug machine compared to my current one. so i was thinking of getting a set of Full Shreds but with slight tweaks and wonder if swapping or mixing magnets is the way to go.

for the bridge i was thinking what would a ceramic magnet do instead of the regular A5, or if mixing them would make something nice. what i'm hoping for is a slightly expanded lower end and low mids. a little bit more bite would be welcome as well. not a drastic change overall, just a slight push in the frequencies at both ends of the spectrum, making it sound a little 'bigger' like other metal-oriented pickups, while retaining its core characteristics. in other words, sounding a little more mean without sacrificing its infamous tightness and clarity.

as for the neck, i think it's almost there: it just needs a slightly fuller midrange, it could use a little bit more warmth. it's also slightly weak when split. what would an A2 magnet do in the neck of a Full Shred? or mixed with an A5? what i'm looking for is an ever so slightly 'juicier' sound all around.

should i go custom shop? price isn't really an issue.

thanks for your time guys!

Re: Full Shreds magnet swaps?

You might want to skip the Full Shred completely and go with a Pegasus/Sentient set which seems to do what you want right out of the box. It certainly is tighter than a Full Shred, and sounds great will low tunings in a longer scale.

UOA5 for the neck. Regular ceramic or A8 for the bridge.

awesome guys, thanks for the replies.

i certainly gave the Pegasus a thought, it's a second option, i'd love to try it. though i did try the Sentient and i was less impressed with it, i found it lacking character in general.

after a quick research a UOA5 sounds great.

has anybody got any experience with tweaking the Full Shreds specifically ?

Re: Full Shreds magnet swaps?

Full Shred bridge are Duncan Custom coils with different pole. Try all the magnet options people have tried for the Custom.

Neck is most likely closest to a Jazz, also with different poles. Go from there.

Re: Full Shreds magnet swaps?

For a cheap start you coud try to put fillister screws in the closest bridge coil , so you will have more bass , and more upper end .
If unlikely the bass are getting too fat , you could shorten them . You could try it also in the neck .
But keep hex screws at all neck oriented coils .

The next move is to change the magnet , the Alnico 8 in the bridge with is close to ceramic but without fizz ,
in the neck UOA5 , I never tried , but I got good results with alnico 8 in a Jazz neck . ( and the FS neck is tighter )

^ merci! oui j'y ai pensé aussi, mettre des visses normales du coté du bridge coil (j'emmerde la terminologie, je m'y connais qu'en anglais) ca devrait rendre le tout un peu plus epais. i'll give it a try, thanks
