Full Stacks Rule!

Totally untrue overgeneralization. I play w/earplugs religiously.

I also wear ear plugs religiously and any other musician playing loud rock music should as well.

I hate it when the stage volume gets loud. I get very stressed out if I can't hear my vocal monitor clearly.

This is why in-ear monitors are great.

Re: Full Stacks Rule!

Double half stack takes my vote. My cab placement varies, indoors I like them one-by-one, outdoors one-on-one.

Anyway, do what feels right man ;)

I just sent korova a PM, but I guess I could just ask here.
What would be a good CD of RadioHead to check out to "try" them out?

I like "The Bends" best with "OK Computer" a close second.

My JBL MR 15" monitor is just fine. My point is that the stage volume should never get that loud.

Re: Full Stacks Rule!

I guess that depends on what style you play. I play rather loud metal with a loud drummer, so in-ear monitors are a godsend.

Re: Full Stacks Rule!

In-ear monitors are great if you have an engineer that can limit the volume, or you will go deaf just as fast, if not actually puncture your ear drums!

As for turning down, as Lew suggested, my post has NOTHING to do with volume, actually, but how @ sane levels, a full stack sounds just BETTER ... and secondly, you can only play sooo low with a metal drummer.

i completely agree with you. My amp has so much more clarity and feel to it when i run both 4x12 cabs instead of just 1. When playing a gig i set em up on each side of the drummer so everybody has a cab pointing at them instead of just the side i am on. Makes my band mates happy as well because they can hear me better that way without having to run it through their monitors.

-edit also even at low volumes it sounds alot better with my rig anyways

First off before anyone gets sidetracked. If you play in a band and don't wear hearing protection you're just fooling yourself, trust me it willcatch up with you. Westone plugs are inexpensive and work wonderfully, they can use different db cut filters and work really, really well. The best I have tried. They also make in-ear monitors which if you can deal with them are pretty cool.

My big gig days are pretty much behind me so I sold off my big rig but I have to say a good stack kicks butt. Yeah hauling them can be a pain in the arse but the sound dispersion and tone from eight 12" speakers is pretty righteous. I generally run a combo with a 2x12 cab these days and it definitely doesn't equal the stack no matter how you slice it. I prefer straight cabs as opposed to slants I don't like the bass response from most slant cabs.

Re: Full Stacks Rule!

It sounds better with full stack because there is more speakers, and you get speakers in the height of your ears.
Try sitting on the flor playing on your half stack. The sound is better there than standing. You will have to play very loud to get the good sound. So it may be better for your hearing to play with a full stack in my opinion.

It can be smart to put a halfstack up on a crate or or box or something, who is strong enough offcourse, to get the speakers higher and get some of the fullstack effect :)
