So I got an e-mail from Chicago Music Exchange the other day, about a new version of the Fulltone OCD. Believing my own OCD to be a V4, I thought this would be a V5. Nah, loc, a V2. (Edit: It looks like it had been up to a V7, so forget about your quaint notions of a V4.)

Anybody know how that works?

Unless the last version is actually a V1.7, which would explain everything.

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

I forgot that the OCD I have now isn't the same one I bought in 2011. The one I have was built in October 2015 and is marked "ver.1.7" on the inside. Also has "Version 1.7 11/2012" on the circuit board.

Science!

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

I'll just be out in the garage if anybody needs me for anything.

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

All the versions have been 1.0 - 1.7. The internet called it V1-V7. They've been slight tweaks to a resistor or cap here or there.

V2 is an updated design, seems like input and output stages are redesigned as well as having the new "enhanced bypass".

In all likelihood he needed a redesign since many people have played the original, and true bypass is falling out of fashion.

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

Similar to how the FD3 was released with smaller enclosure, independent true boost and a few circuit changes.

Yes, I got that email the other day.
Is this just what my Mum used to call a 'catch penny' or should we now always be thinking of Ebaying/upgrading for all our pedals as contents of these things evolve?? I don't understand the list of enhancements in the email, but by gum they look important. :smack:

i like that they increased the input resistance, curious how it feels compared to the older ones

I usually don't worry about upgrades or newer versions of things I already own. Sometimes the newer version has some feature that I really like, that would really change things for me using it. Then it might be worth selling off and getting the new one. I've only done that about twice.

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

yeah, i dont know if thats true. a good buffer is better than a poor one for sure but if im only using one pedal, which is frequently, i prefer it to be true bypass

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

As someone that is not familiar with the OCD (I've heard of it, but never tried one)...what does it do differently?

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

Do elaborate.

The big push in boutique pedals was to go to True Bypass. This eliminates the terrible vintage style bypass that leaves the circuit connected to the output jack all the time. This causes you to hear the phantom phase shifter in the background or a wah that loads down the signal even when bypassed. It also eliminates the buffered bypass that can be configured to sound great or not so great.

As we all know, if you have one or two pedals, true bypass is great. When you have 10 pedals, all the excess cable can roll off a bit of high end. The great solution most people use is to use a few buffered pedals along with a bunch of True Bypass pedals.

When I say True Bypass is falling out of fashion, people are realizing that a good buffer can help the overall tone of your circuit, and that pedals like the Klon have a very good sounding buffer. It seems many more pedals are offered with the option of True Bypass or Buffered Bypass. Sometimes to get a buffer in the overall chain, some to provide "trails" on reverb and delay.

TL;DR
Most pedals today are still TB, but I seem to see more that are either buffered or switchable.

Of course this is just my informal observation.... The truth may be different. :)

I've owned a lot of the popular OD pedals on the market, and my V4(?) is my favorite. Great feel, great sound and wonderful dynamics. My favorite boost pedal as well.

Re: Fulltone OCD V2 -- Wait, what?

I may have to finally get an OCD. Have always liked the ones I've messed around with at GC, just haven't dropped the cash for one.....yet.

It's worth it. It's built like a little tank and sounds glorious with tube amps. If you don't want to spend the price of a new one, there are used ones to be had.
