Funny Stuff

So, today I manage to work out some time to fire up the soldering iron and get busy on an amp. It turns out I go to make my first connection and the soldering tip portion where the threads are actually breaks off in the iron. I just laughed. Seems like all the forces in the universe do not want me to complete an amp these days!

So, I'll go get a new iron tomorrow at lunch. Haha! I think I need to hit a bunch of energy sodas and just stay up all night a few times this week. I'm so freaking close to finishing three projects. Crazy stuff. But, the new job and family come first.

Re: Funny Stuff

Ooh soldering iron accident stories huh? Well once when I was 14 or so I decided to solder my broken headphones back together. Unfortunately someone had dropped the iron a while back and the barrel rocked back and forth. Well I wasn't thinking and decided to hold it like a pencil so I could get a better grip on it.

I didn't make that mistake twice.

By the way, what type of amp were you working on?

Re: Funny Stuff

please turn away if you are offended by the careless modification of vintage amps

so i was working on my bf deluxe reverb about a week and a half ago. previously i had removed the negative feedback which was great but it left the amp a little noisy and maybe a little too loud for a resort gig im doing this summer so i decided to put the nfb on the unused ground switch. so i moved some wires around and pulled out the cap that was grounded to the chassis.

i did this while sitting on the floor of my apt since my 'work bench' is covered in pups in various stages of build and some amp transformers for some amps that i may or may not ever get around to building. anyway im sitting with my legs spread and the amp between them just resting the soldering iron on the floor with the tip up so it wont burn the wood floors. so i get a wiff of a strange and unplesant odor and before i can figure out what it is i realize that the tough part of my heel is resting on the soldering iron and smoking.

my gf thought this was funny as heck and couldnt stop laughin as i hopped on one foot into the kitchen to grab an ice cube.

still have a nice peanut shaped black mark that is tender :smack:

Re: Funny Stuff

I believe I've mentioned before the workmate that decided to hold one between his teeth......

Re: Funny Stuff

One time I spent about 3 hours wiring my Strat together. I screwed the pickguard pack on, tested the pickups, it worked great...then as i'm playing i switched from the neck to the bridge and heard two 'pops' along the way...both of my single coils just popped off.

i still get butterflies when i think of my dad getting impailed by my soldering iron a few years back. i had forgot it cooling on a holder clipped to the wall near my bench... my dad went downstairs to check on the furnace and stuck it right in his neck... and of course he was mad as hell and of course he would not go to the doctor to get it cleaned out....

Re: Funny Stuff

I took a high reliability soldering class awhile back, and the teacher told a funny story about teaching guys in shops to solder. He said he always started by holding up an iron, and asking, "What is this for?"

Of course, he'd receive a multitude of answers, one being, "To warm up my coffee." Turns out this guy would actually stick his iron into his coffee mug to give it a quick warm up :smack:

You're talking to me all wrong... It's the wrong tone. You do it again and I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron. Hey, tell me, does your mother sew? BOOM. Get her to sew that!

Re: Funny Stuff

I was installing a mod chip in my buddy's playstation 1. We're talking first playstation, first generation. Anyway, I needed to solder the wires to some pads on the board. I needed about 2 extra hands to hold everything in place. well my buddy was doing the holding. I finish with one of the wires and I lift the Iron ... right onto his finger. He screamed like a little girl. it was so funny, but I felt REAL bad at the time.

Re: Funny Stuff

I was finishing up some stuff on a 5F2 1x12 thing.

But, my best story was new house, new wood floor in the dining room. I balanced the iron on the floor while changing out a pup. Next thing I know I have what looks like a cigarette burn on the floor. I covered it up. Daughter had a high school party that weekend. Wife discovered the burn and blamed the daughters friends. She still doesn't know to this day and it's been 6 years or so now. I ain't tellin'.
