fusion guys what are you using?

Just as the title says... is there a certain pickup you're using or are you just rolling off the volume of the neck pup a little? Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

Ah, I see. When I try to play stuff like that I pick up one of three guitars:

1. LP with a PG/C5 combo

2. Hamer SPecial FM with APH/Super Distortion combo

3. MIJ 62 RI STrat with EMG Dave Gilmour Set.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

I seem to be using weaker pickups and letting the "amp"
do the work.

I have a strat with Cool Rails wired in parallel (pretty
much the same as vintage rails). I have a Schecter
Jazz-7 with Duncan Designed Jazz and JB pickups and
usually use the Jazz with a coil cut, sometimes middle
position with one of the pickups having a coil cut. I
don't have much need these days for letting the JB
overpower the amp.

I'm getting an Epi LP Black Beauty with Seths and a
Fred, with coil cutters on each pickup, we'll see if I
can make $300 worth of HB pickups turn into lipstick
tubes.

I'm listenning these days to Scott Henderson, Robben
Ford and classic blues players (just discovered Albert
Collins) so I like some "vintage tone" underneath the
dirt. (Scott Henderson, though sometimes too processed
usually does have some real strat tone lurking underneath).

I also listen to Sco, Bill Frisell, Ben Monder and other
cleaner, brighter, modern players and for those tones, vintage
humbuckers in neck and bridge are about right.

I also listen to Shawn Lane and Frank Gambale, but I think
that with the right distortion and delay dialed in, one can get
that sort of sound without using high output pickups.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

No need to roll the volume of anything down. Fusion is a lot of things. Actually I don't know if the neck pickup is really used that much.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

gambale uses a JB

so do i :D

i also like the AIIP(n), but guys who play with more gain and more speed than me might test its articulate-ness ... for my slow playing, it keeps up fine

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

i use a APH2 in the neck, & a JB in my Brian Moore, which is maple/mahog...i can get a nice warm sound with a tubescreamer and my mesa blue angel- very holdsworth-y. now if only i could play like hime...or if anyone could play like him...

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

If I'm playing in the style of McLaughlin, DiMeola, Lane, Eric Johnson... well, trying to play like that. LOL, I'm really digging the smoothness of an Alnico Pros 2 in the neck, with a Custom Custom in the bridge.

... Never really cared for Frank Gambale's sound with a JB, though it might be better for his sweep picking style.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

I'm suprised so many guys use the bridge pup a lot. I really don't know how they are getting those smooth gainy tones in the bridge.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

For fusion I do like the JB/59.

My fave combo has to be the VPAF/Air Zone. Al Di Meola used to use a Super Distortion. I like them as well. I also liked my old 70s DiMarzio PAF.

You know, T-TOP humbuckers really work well for that 70s tone, like Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Re: fusion guys what are you using?

i think gambale's tone has improved immensely over the last 10-15 yrs ... as much as i loved his note choice from the moment i saw and heard him live in '86, i think his tone use to have a kinda fizzy or buzzy quality (ibanez / dimarzio) that has gone out since he went to the carvin / yamaha / duncan chain

I use the alnico 2 pro in the neck and a custom custom in the bridge of my carvin ct6. I use all positions depending on the song, when I'm playing really experimental stuff i use my bridge pickup while using a keeley ds-1 and when I play smooth slow songs I use my neck pickup with my tube screamer, both be pluged into my super reverb

I went to see Frank in a club gig here in LA with Alphonso Johnson (who invited us down). he had the rack gear and the Ibanez. He was loud and fast, and I am NOT a huge rack fan - BUT, how can you improve on what he had going? His shreddy fusion and speed and tone were plain amazing. I can attest to it, it nearly made me deaf.
