Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

What style guitar do you like the best?

Fuzz pedals come in a variety of forms. Some GE some Si (some hybrid). Some lower gain, some high gain. Some old school voiced some modern voiced. What tone from the fuzz do you like?

It is just an open question. I am curious about the different options available. I never looked into fuzz effects so far, so it is simply about educating myself.

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

I tried a few fuzz pedal this afternoon:

First stop, Sound control. I learned today they were specialized in boss/roland gear, which is a bit limiting for the choice of fuzz box but, they had the new FZ-5.
The three modes, replicating original fuzz effects was quite interesting. But then Pierre, who was on the trip with me, mentioned that the modes weren't really up to the quality of the mocked boxes, which didn't really surprise me, that is usually the way with digital stuff. But the real thing that was missing was a tone pot for each mode.

Then, on the way to Pierre's place we stopped at live music where I tried a dirty rat and the double muff. The first one just didn't do it for me, I wouldn't know why, it just didn't pull any string. Then the double muff had some nice sounds but again was missing a tone pot.

Finally, I tried Pierre's big muff and was fairly happy with the sound on offer. As he is not using it in his rig right now, he lend it to me, which will allow me to try it further and get a better idea and see if it is right for me or not.

BTW, don't bring your guitar to Pierre. He is really good to dismantle stuff but is lacking the proper tolls to put back together. So know I have two unusable guitar until I finally prepare and install the new nut for the Epi.

Merci l'ami !!!

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

What is your favourite fuzz peadl and why?

I´ve played an MI Audio GI Fuzz for a few days now, and it seems like a pretty damn fine fuzz.

Usually I don´t care much about fuzzes, they often either lack in dynamics or versatility. This one has all the dynamics you´ll ever need and it´s the most versatile fuzz I´ve ever tried.

This one goes from clean boost to slight blues grit to hendrix-y to scooped modern metal to cracklin synth-like fuzz to almost-octavia-like overtones.

Is nice, I like.

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

I've been playing Pierre's muff this afternoon on my freshly reassembled Epi.

At first I was quite surprised to see that, the distortion pedal I was looking for for a wee while, which I wanted to a have a tone fairly similar to the LC15R when overdriven with added grit, is indeed a fuzz box. When cranked, the LC15R does produce a moderately fuzzed overdrive.

So this was a rather good start.

Then, I managed to find convincing sounds to play some AC-DC, and crucially, some early and later days ZZ Top. I wouldn't say I nailed the Mascalero sound of Billy Gibbons but got a fairly good approximation with tone completely rolled off, the sustain at one quarter and the volume to two third, on a clean middy sound from the amp and the bridge '59. Then for the early days, tone to 2/3 with more sustain sounded quite sweet.

I'll obviously further investigate the tonal possibilities of this little cranked uber LC15R in a box. But it is is indeed a good start.

The only downside I found so far is the non-natural sounding of the sustained notes (especially with chords) when the sustain knob is pushed too far.

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

I use a Keeley Fuzz Head which sounds somewhere in between fuzz and overdrive. Great pedal though, VERY clear sound... loads of definition, articulate and tweakable. The only pedal I've found that I'd put in front of my Cornford Hellcat because it is clearer than the built in drive. Try one!

I really do like mine, I like my Huckleberry as well. Different creatures that do their thing extreemly well!

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

I had (money got tight and had to sell) a Frantone Peachfuzz and it was probably the best sounding modern fuzz for the simple fact that it has BALLS.

Re: Fuzz box shootout!!!

I currently have a newish mini bigmuff and a long-term loan custom made tonebender mk2 clone. Both are very cool.

I really dig the frantone peachfuzz and the Keeley javaboost. I quite like my friend's tweakfuzz as well.

Here's one that hasn't been mentioned: the Dimarzio Very Metal. Way more of a fuzz than a metal overdrive, and very cool.
