G&L ASAT pickup.

I'm on the look out for pickups for my ongoing Tele project, and I've spotted an ASAT neck pickup on Ebay. Any thoughts or info? I'm pretty much set on getting a JD for the bridge, and already have a 4-way switch to give me the series option. Would this pickup work well with the JD and the 4-way??

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

i have a G&L S 500 with the uber mag field pickups (whatever they call em).

they are true single coils but they are FREAKING HOT. they drove me nuts because i got microphonic feedback from them. i had to change them out.

my impression ::

they are clean, clear and LOUD on low gain. the only use i can see for these pickups is a bunch of old farts sitting around with vintage low gain amps (thats not a bad thing, cause i'm an old fart). with the G&L S500 i had a treble cut (standard tone control) and a bass cut. so i guess i should of been smarter with them, but generally it was a pain in the ass.

G&L is a kick ass guitar maker, but i dont like the pickup ideas they have. they have a couple of proprietary pickups that sound unique, but i would rather see them use duncan/dimarzio/lace.

ASAT stands for "a strat and a tele" so that might be a different pickup than i had (only 1 tone control?).

i'm sure someone will scream BLASPHEMY and say i didnt use the right amp or eq or something, but i warned ye. if it was me i would rather take a chance on a sure thing, a pickup that was made to be balanced with the pickup you are going to put in the bridge.

from G & L ::

The patented Magnetic Field Design® pickups use a ceramic bar magnet installed underneath each coil, with soft iron adjustable pole pieces to transfer the magnetic field to the surface of the pickup. By contrast, traditional Alnico type pickups, such as used in the Legacy and George Fullerton models, use nonadjustable Alnico pole pieces leaving the only adjustment being pickup height. The Magnetic Field Design has this adjustment, but further offers individual adjustment of each pole piece, letting the player effectively adjust the output of each string on each pickup. Magnetic Field Design yield about twice the output per wind, making the pickup quieter while allowing a greater overall output. The sound of Magnetic Field pickups is slightly warmer with a broader frequency response.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

I've got a Legacy, but have Duncans in that. My thinking was that maybe the hotter pickup would give a bigger voice in, what can be, a weak voiced position for a Tele. Anyone else???

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

ive never tried one except stock in a g&l but i liked the neck position best. might be worth a try

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

I've got an ASAT and I think the MFD pick ups are cool... well, sort of hot! Lol... I get a thicker and punchier Tele sound with mine, and they seems to handle gain better than any trad Tele type pick up I've heard! The only other comparison I can use is that my band mate bought a couple of BareKnuckle Tele PUPS (don't know what model) and we both agree that we like mine better! I'd get it, if you don't like it move it on. All the best.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

I would get it. I always liked those, and I'm not a big fan of Tele neck pickups. So that ASAT Classic neck pickup was a breath of fresh air for me. Couple that with a JD Lead pickup and 4-way switch, and you'll have a fantastic, versatile tele.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

I think I'll probably go for it. I can always sell it on if it doesn't work out. Or save it for the next project.....:D

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

:smack: Oh man, look...:haha: Keith's showing off again 'coz HE'S got 3 MFD pick ups in his!! Lol... Good choice Stevie, I think you'll like it... if not, sell it to Keith I'm sure he can fit another one in there somewhere! :biglaugh:

Actually guys, is it possible to connect 2 together to create a bucker? I bet that would ROCK... 2 MFD's together... Wod'ya think Keith?

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

Seriously tho, Keith. I was hoping you'd chime in. What do you reckon to the MFD in the neck of yours? Reckon one would work with a JD?

They are pretty hot pickups. I think an MFD in the neck would complement the JD nicely. I've never played a JD before, so I'm going by the clips on Duncan's site.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

Hey Stevie, if you get it and don't like it (which I doubt!), I'll buy it off ya for sure! So, you can't lose really. I fitted a 4 way switch to my ASAT and it's a cool guitar for most styles now. But the neck pick up is really cool, add some gain and you can play some really smooth, blues lead ... hell, I've done a gig and couldn't be bothered to change guitars and played Sweet Child O Mine on it... including the intro! Seriously bud, if it's not for you I'll take it.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

Sounds like a plan. When I first started planning my Tele project, I thought about going with a neck bucker. This might be a great single/bucker compromise.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

Sorry Stevie.. Slightly off topic here, but what body and neck are going for? Only yesterday I was looking on the USA C Guitar site at the options for a Tele project. My plan is a Tele body, maybe thin line?, with a strat type neck/ headstock... 'Lil 59 bridge, MFD middle and Vintage stack neck. Wiring like a Legacy.. Vol, Bass and Treble. Ash body and Rosewood board. I was going to re-fin my ASAT ala Keiths Orange, but want another T type anyway.. so would have it that colour. What's your plan??

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

At the moment I've got a pretty cheap cream body and and rosewood boarded neck that I bought from Ebay earlier this year. As this is my first attempt at putting a guitar together, I figured that the body and neck I could upgrade once I'm more comfortable with what I'm doing. That way, if I make any stupid errors I'm not going to be too much out of pocket. I'm happy wiring and soldering, so I'm fitting the best electronics, pots, pickups etc. I'm planning on an traditional ash body, and a soft v'd, rosewood neck.

Give me a minute and I'll post a pic of what I have.

250k CTS pots, 4-way switch Switchcraft jack, Wilkinson compensated bridge, JD in the bridge, and possibly the MFD in the neck.
Going to get straplocks and locking tuners further down the road.

Re: G&L ASAT pickup.

Wow, that already looks cool! I'm really wanted to put one together too, I've only got the idea, the 'lil59 and the vintage stack! I guess I'll just keep looking.
