G&L good value?

Re: G&L good value?

G&L makes really, really excellent guitars. If you are a vintage Fender snob and insist that everything from the tuners to the bridge match '52 specs, you're going to hate the ASAT. If you just want a really good Tele, you won't be disappointed.

Re: G&L good value?

The three-bold neck still freaks me out. I keep thinking of CBS-era Fenders and trying to keep one in tune...

Re: G&L good value?

My Korean G&L ASAT Special has a four-bolt neck...and it plays and sounds better than my USA Strat ever did!!

Re: G&L good value?

I regretfully had to sell my ASAT recently but no fear, I WILL get another as soon as finances allow!! I still have my 3 bolt Legacy.. better than 99.9% of strats I've ever played. DON'T let the old Fender 3 bolts put you off 'coz there is no comparison.

So compared favourably to a US Tele - what are the pups like? Are the necks thick or thin?

Serial Number is 8044536 -anyone know how to date it?

The pick ups are nice and fat, not thin and weedy... the neck on mine was quite narrow, but for what I was doing n(which was just banging out chords in a 60's raw rock band... Smallfaces, Yardbirds, Kinks etc...) it was awesome. I genuinely tried loads and LOADS of Fenders.. I really wanted a '52 R.I, but I only found one Fender that I liked better than the ASAT and that was a Custom shop double bound Tele... more than twice the price! I wany a butterscotch Classic S next.

Re: G&L good value?

Get a used one, pre 1995 or so. The newer ones are very heavy and have that awful bleached looking maple neck. The older ones had a nice tint with a gloss finish.

BTW, the guitar in my avatar is a 1991 law suit S-500.

There is nothing better than a G&L! My favorite current production model is the Asat Classic Custom. Here's my '08 Asat Classic Custom.

G&L's three bolt necks are stable. They don't move around like Fender's version did. G&L, used the three bolt design from 1980 to 1997. During the 1997 model year they switched to four bolt necks.

You're 100% correct. G&L's aren't the same as Fender's. Leo Fender worked hard during his years at G&L to produce instruments and pickups that he thought were superior to his work while at Fender. I think he succeeded in building a better guitar.

Re: G&L good value?

The change over from three bolt necks to four bolt necks was done in the middle of the '97 model year. So it's an early '97 or older.

Was quality better/worse/similar then to now? Serial Number is 8044536 - does the last digit perhaps stand for 96?
