G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

Can you play it first, or is it a mail order thing? G&L Tributes can vary quite a bit. However, I think they are among the best import guitars made, in general.

Unfortunately although G&L's have a good reputation they are not all that well known except among players. I don't think I've ever seen one hanging on the wall at local shops. I plan on buying it on line at GC and my local store says I can return it to them if I don't like it so it's basically no risk.

I would call up Tru Tone Music in Santa Monica. They stock G&Ls, and they are only about 80 miles from you. It's an easy day trip, and worth it if they have what you are looking for in stock. Talk to Paul (AKA Beertruck), and tell him the Bloody Brains sent ya!

G&Ls are my favorite mass produced US-made guitars. And I think they have done a good job with their import line as well. However, they can have the usual import problems, including the big one, inconsistency. That is why it is important to try them first, if you have never played a Tribute. Having played Tributes, I'd feel confident mail ordering one if I had to...but I would not have done so before ever trying one.

P.S. I just found the link to Tru Tone's G-Base page. Not sure how up to date it is, but it's a start: http://www.gbase.com/stores/truetone-music/inventory.

Every G&L I've picked up - including Tribute models - has been a great guitar. I don't think I can name any other brand that produces such consistently good instruments.

Pull the trigger.
Dont own a G and L but a local music store carries both the American and imports.
The quality of both lines is impressive.
Shameless recommendation: The Tribute ASAT Deluxe is an great substitute for a Tele
with HB's and it has a carved top.
Lastly, Leo Fender admits these are the finest [American] guitars he ever built.

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

I really want to own a G&L ASAT Deluxe one day. But on topic, go for it. I have only loved every G&L I've played, and they were all tributes.

no.
save up and get a real g&l when you can afford it. They are superb axes.

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

I have a Tribute Classic with the standard American-made single coils. Sounds like a Sixties Tele. The neck feels more like a Strat than a Tele to me. The same body with a P90 or a humbucker in it should do the business.

Indeed they are, but don't count out the Tributes. This is not like Mexican vs. American Fenders. They are built to G&L USA specs using the same electronics (including pickups), hardware, and wood (though the best lumber stays in the US factory, of course). The only component difference is that the bridge saddles are cast instead of milled. The Tributes are all shipped back to the Fullerton factory for setup and inspection - even ones bound for Asia and your wacky island :p

IMHO, Tributes are competing in quality with USA Fenders. Meanwhile USA G&L's are competing with Fender Custom Shop.

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

I must agree that each USA G&L is of Fender Custom Shop quality (though with poly finishes - some of the best by any guitar maker). They are how a USA made guitar ought to be. And they can be bought very affordably on the used market.

But if you want new on a budget, don't count the Tributes out. And if you buy them used, they are real bangs for the buck.

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

I used to own a few US GLs over the years, both basses and guitars. I can agree that the US GLs are on par with the Fender Custom shop.

I really like the ASAT line even more than the strat line.

I have heard the same thing about the Tribute line that they are just about equal in quality to most US guitars.

But play before you pay if you can.

Re: G&L Tribute Bluesboy - Should I pull the trigger?

I've never owned one, but I've played several in stores and was always...yes I said ALWAYS...impressed with the quality and playability. They are beautiful instruments.

I have no idea why I don't own one.

i ALWAYS laugh when people write non-US-made guitars are just as good as US-made.

I always laugh when people make blanket generalizations about things they've never touched, let alone seen.
