Gain Dilemma...

Hey,

I own a ENGL screamer as alot of you probs already know, and i am in a bit of a dilemma.

I like its clean, its crunch channel, and i use the Soft Lead a lot, i love its sound on that channel, and I have its fairly high up. I use it for AC/DC and such, but the Heavy Lead is too much.

Way too much gain for metallica and such.

Would a boost pedal be the solution? In that case which one with a more "mesa boogie" like sound?

Thanks.

Re: Gain Dilemma...

heavy lead on a screamer should do metallica very well. in fact the Screamer is one of the more "low-gain"(at least compared to the others) Engls. There shouldn't be too much gain in the heavy lead channel and engls can sound like pretty much any mesa if you set them right, except for the flubby mesa-lowend. Engls are too tight for that.
What settings are you using on the eq and gain?

Re: Gain Dilemma...

My gain is around 3/4 or 3o'clock i would say.

bass is at a 2 o'clock, mids at 7-8 o'clock (Not that much mids), and highs at about 12 o'clock (perhaps a bit lower) and presence at the same, per haps a bit higher.

Its weird, because even with max bass, and with highs higher than this, it will sound cutting in ones ears, like no bass.

Re: Gain Dilemma...

man, you have basicly no mids dialed in no wonder you think it's too much gain. Scooped mids imo make the sound more buzzy and less defined, try turning the mids up to get some transparency and less buzz.
Engls are bright amps by nature, don't overdo treble and presence and take the pups you are using into consideration.

Re: Gain Dilemma...

I am using a Custom 5 in a basswood les paul. Might be different pickups i need?

Re: Gain Dilemma...

Don't know about the C5 but with considering the pups i meant looking at the eq chart to know what the pup delivers and then use the controls to balacne out/accentuate and so on. The guitar and it's materials are also a great factor of course.
