Gang of 4 - Flangers

I figured this might be a good way to turn folks onto some new pedals by listing your favorites that you own/use. List them up.

Your 4 heavy hitter FLANGER pedals.

1. Thorpy - Camoflange
2. Dreadbox - Komorebi
3. A/DA - Flanger
4. Strymon - Decco

I have a few I use the BF-2 the most live even though I like the Moog the best.
  1. Moog Moogerfooger MF-108M Clusterflux
  2. BOSS BF-2 Black Label (MIJ)
  3. DigiTech EX7 - ADA clone with variable-sweep
  4. MXR Micro Flange - had one loved it I might rebuy one
  5. MXR M-117 Flanger - Got rid of it the volume drop when engaged drove me crazy.

I've had so little use for flanging that my purple BOSS flanger has sat in the box since I got it and I only use my old ADA S1000 rack unit if I really need to make that sound.

I don’t own any but have owned a MXR (old one with the cord built in), a Boss BF-2b (sounds great with guitar), and a BF-2.

No flanger love? I like flangers as long as they are not used in an over the top manner.

I really love a very subtle (just about audible) flanging effect added to a nice mellow overdriven tone - even more so for a Marshall style driven tone.

I read there is flanger on Free - All Right Now, though I don't hear it myself. In any case the combination works really well.

A different example where you can tell there is definitely some subtle flanger in play is Rory Gallagher - Follow Me.

I haven't tried enough pedals to even put 5 together though...same with the other categories, will leave that to those with more experience.

Another cool pedal worth mentioning that I had forgotten about is the DigiTech Nautila (Chorus/Flanger) pedal. Very cool for what it is/does.

I currently own three flanger pedals. For home playing, I would rank them in this order: (1) MXR EVH flanger; (2) Electro Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress XO; (3) Boss BF-3. For gigging, I would move the Boss from (3) to (2) and put the EHX pedal last because of volume and bass drop.

Other guys are able to get great use out of them, but I've only been able to use them once or twice in the studio as a special effect (more than that in the music I've been doing and it sounds like too much, more of a crutch than effect), and live, because of the dramatic apparent/effective EQ shift they cause as an artifact, they just make the guitar surge in and out of the mix, instead of just being a cool effect but not causing tone suck or levels out of control. I just find them hard to work with. There are other similar options I prefer over flange like slow, shallow chorus, or phaser, or Leslie for rotating/phasing/swriling effects.

BOSS BF-2 (Japan)

Not for the flanging, but for the very interesting guitar-friendly midrange it imparts when set a certain way.
