Has anyone ever tried this? I'm new to garage band and haven't figured the live recording feature out yet. Can I go from my multi-effects pedal to the app since that's where I have all my custome pre-sets? How do ya'll setup for recording through the app?

Re: Garage Band Recording with iPad/MAC

Apple Logic user here. (Garage Band's bigger brother.)

I connect audio and MIDI sources to my computers via an In/Out box. My gear demands the Apple-specific FireWire cable. The majority of I/O boxes have USB. Some have both.

Apple IOS devices require an I/O box with the appropriate connector for the edge of the specific device.

Regarding the multi-effect unit, yes, using this to record is practicable and advantageous. External signal processing reduces the need for internal processing, unburdening the CPU.

For as much as I love Logic, I cannot figure out GB for iPad.
It is incredidly counter intuitive and limiting.
If you get it sorted, I would love to hear how you are doing it.

For iPad, I would recommend using Cubasis and the Focusrite iPad dock.

WILL DO...I HAVE A CUBASE ON AN OLDER LAPTOP AND I CANT FOR THE LIFE OF ME UNDERSTAND THAT SOFTWARE....I UNDERSTAND GB MORE THAN CUBASE....WISH LOGIC WAS FREE

Speaking of focusrite - I use my 2i2 focusrite with my ipad. Any class compliant interface will work through the camera connection kit. I also use my M-Audio Venom synth interface as it is also a class compliant audio/midi interface

you can also use keyboard or pad controllers through a powered usb hub into the camera connection kit

For guitar, I use Apogee Jam interface. Guitar of course also works through regular interfaces like my focusrite and M-Audio

Check out Bias Amp app on ipad for amazing amps

This is a much better fit in Tips & Clips. I'm moving it there.

I thought the only way to make the 2i2 work that way was with a usb hub because the 2i2 cannot be powered from the iPad.
Are you connected directly from the 2i2 to the iPad?

Yes, with a powered hub, just like keyboard and pad controllers.

I connect the hub to the cck

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YALL ARE TALKING ABOUT LOL.....:15:

I HAVE A MACBOOK PRO IM TRYING TO GO THROUGH WITH MY MULTI EFFECTS, THE INPUT ON THE COMPUTER IS AN INPUT/OUTPUT JACK DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU PLUG INTO IT. I THINK I HAVE TO HAVE A MONO 1/4" TO 1/8" ADAPTER FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY. HAVE YOU TRIED THIS WAY?

Re: Garage Band Recording with iPad/MAC

You are shouting again. :D

Meanwhile, Focusrite thought of iPad users and adapted their existing technology into this. http://uk.focusrite.com/ios-audio-interfaces/itrack-dock#

Their dock was mentioned and was why I brought up the focusrite and other interface stuff - you know, for those that already have class compliant pro audio interfaces. Dock looks cool too if you dont already have an interface that is class compliant.

Re: Garage Band Recording with iPad/MAC

For going straight from the guitar or floor unit to my MAC, do I HAVE to have a MONO jack on both ends of that cable? Or can it be stereo?

Re: Garage Band Recording with iPad/MAC

The analogue input and output sockets on the Mac are TRS. They will accept the Line Level signal from your guitar effects unit but you may experience level mismatch and ground loop issues. You may have no option but to govern the recorded level via the effects unit's output control. This, in turn, may adversely affect the sound.

Generally speaking, commercial I/O boxes are a good idea. There is the immediacy of physical controls. Signal levels get matched. The analogue-to-digital conversion is often superior to the computer's. Monitoring is easier.

Speaking for myself, the I/O box that I purchased in 2007 is still serving my needs today. The one thing that would force me to change it will be a computer with no backwards compatibility to FW400. i.e. A Mac Pro.

I DID FIND MY OLD, INTERFACE, IF YOU WILL....ITS MADE BY GRIFFIN, NO ELECTRONICS AT ALL....ALL IT HAS IS A 1/4 JACK AND A 3 POLE 1/8 JACK FOR THE IPAD, ALSO, HAS A HEADPHONE LINE OUT FOR THAT SAME SETUP....I HOOKED THE GRIFFIN INTERFACE TO MY FLOOR UNIT MONO OUTPUT AND THEN TO THE IPAD...OPENED UP GARAGEBAND, IMPORTED A SONG FROM MY LIBRARY AND RECORDED OVER IT...
