Garage Rock tone . . . what would you use ?

I s'pose i could have posted this question in any one of the forum sections as this is an overall question.

With your interpretation of the genre, Garage Rock (think 60's, 70's, through to the 90's and beyond) what would you use as a guitar player ?

I am referring to guitar(s), pedals and amp.

Re: Garage Rock tone . . . what would you use ?

Well I kind of play garage rock so....

I use mostly simple guitars Les Paul's (or something Les Paul-ish) though I throw in a Tele, some P-90's or whatever guitar I am obsessing over at any given moment as well. I use an Orange Dual Terror into a 4x10cab with Emi Ragin Cajun's and Ramrod's. I'll use a 1x12 cab or a smaller combo if the gig calls for it. For pedals I have a couple of fuzzes (EH Satisfaction and the tone wicker Muff), a Pigtronix Class A Boost, a Joyo tremolo, an EH B9 pedal and a Soul Food.

My other guitarist uses LP's, Strats, some weird Ibanez and a Jazzmaster thru an Orange TH30c though he's used maybe 4-5 different amps, all combos. I couldn't even try to list his board but he's big on an old Rat pedal and a Way Huge Swollen Pickle for dirty stuff, he also uses and EH C9 and tons of other ones.

This is an Epi LP with and L500 bridge into a Line6 DT112 cab as well as an LP Custom thru the same rig.

One of my fave garage guitarists is Ged Corben from the Lime Spiders he mostly used a LP Custom and I'm pretty sure a Marhall 1/2 stack. Not sure his pedals though.

Weird guitars and gear are always a plus if they work and are spectacular if they kind of don't work.

I'm not really sure what garage rock sounds like. Is there a consensus? To me, it has to sound like Bryan Adams. After all, the garage is where I imagine dude getting together for practice with Jimmy, Jodie, and the rest of the band. So a Strat through a Fender tube amp.

OK so to give you an idea of what I think Garage Rock is think the original Nuggets albums

Lots of the earlier Stones stuff up until a lot of the bands became full on psych bands. Billy Gibbons Moving Sidewalks is a great example to me as well

Central Scrutinizer:
We take you now, to a garage, in Canoga Park.

It wasn't very large
There was just enough room to cram the drums
In the corner over by the Dodge
It was a fifty-four
With a mashed up door
And a cheesy little amp
With a sign on the front said "Fender Champ"
And a second hand guitar
It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar

Is garage rock the same as basement rock?

The answer is any damn thing you want!!!!

Great first hand post (and a kool klip!) from the hands of a master by Wattage!

I always thought basement rock was a bit more underground.

What a cool and fascinating question. "Garage rock" has mutated over the years.

Touchpoints for me along the way would by The Sonics and The Stooges, moving into stuff like Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du in the '80s, then assorted contemporary stuff that I like when I hear it, but no names have stuck with me yet, other than this very nice Jazzmaster-fuzzy video from Larkin Poe:

The gear varies - The Sonics had a semihollow, The Stooges had a Les Paul, J Mascis has a Jazzmaster, etc.

It's all more in the approach than the exact pieces of gear. It would be terrible if you could just buy pre-packaged garage rock tones (then again, if digital modelers came with Cramps and Black Flag presets, then I might look into modelers).

The gear can't be too expensive, and it can't be too "good". Single coils help, though they aren't required. Single coils and fuzz and, yeah, a Fender-type amp can go a long way.

Re: Garage Rock tone . . . what would you use ?

I would use my strat into my 25 watt el84 amp cranked to oblivion and maybe my companion fuzz.

OUCH . . . why like Brain Adams then ?
His sound/tone is wayyy too pollished , smooooth and over-produced (in the studio) to get anywhere close to Garage Rock.

. . . o 0 o . . .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goe2fpeHYLk <--- some of the better known 60's Garage Rock music. (there is a lot of obscure bands too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCYnTK9GvZc <--- not a lot of people classify them as Garage Rock, but i will even bump The Cramps into a sub-genre of Garage Rock

Thanks and before I get sidetracked. The Sonics recent album is unfrigginbelieveablesuperclalfragalistical Garage Rockin'.

Yes Crusty the tone is in the garage especially if stuff gets moved around, you can't believe how much the sound changes when you move the Chevy (or the ute).

So I love my amp setup, does everything I ask of it, easily. Granted I am not exceptionally versatile but it is darn near perfect for me. As for the guitars I could probably play near anything, it's just the stuff I like. My buddy on the other hand is sort of always fighting his sound but since he got the Orange I think he is a lot more locked in. He's used to a lot more FX in the mix than I am and while he can play most stuff you throw at him he'd be more comfortable playing U2 style stuff I am sure.

I use the B9 for some bit parts and to change up some of the background stuff when I am not the lead. I am the lead singer too so I don't mess around with the pedals quite as much. His C9 gets a lot more use but he is also our stunt guitarist lol. I can't recall other than comparing sounds, using them at the same time, I can't see a reason that you couldn't if there was a part for it.

As for the recording I am pretty happy with it but I kind of think it is a little too "nice" sounding. We just cranked the stuff out and I wish I had dialed in a nastier fuzz tone as opposed to just just running straight in on that one. One of the things I really love about Garage stuff is, like a lot of great Punk-y stuff, you tend to cut out a lot of the fluff. I like the rawness and the simplicity of most of it.

There are so many great songs and killer bands that fall under the banner of Garage Rock. Explore man explore!!!

On a more serious note, have you ever played through a small amp with everything cranked to 10? It is not the thin, fuzzy tone I associate with the early to mid-'60s garage rock, but it can be a great trashy tone more along the lines of the late '60s/early '70s proto-punk stuff.
