Garageband Connections

I've just got my self a MacBook Pro, and would like to have a play with Garageband. What do I need to be able to connect my guitar to it??

I've got a Behringer V-Amp 2, put I'm not sure of the best way to use it with Garageband.

Any ideas??

Re: Garageband Connections

Hey Stevie,

You'll need a unit that can accept a 1/4" instrument cable and send its output via USB to the MacBook. (Do the new MacBooks have FireWire as well?)

I'm not familiar with the V-Amp.

Re: Garageband Connections

Yeah, it's got a Firewire connection. I've got a connector that connects the V-Amp via its MIDI connection to USB, but looks like I'll be getting myself a Firewire connector and/or audio-USB!!!

Cheers Keith.

Re: Garageband Connections

You won't be so w00t! once you've been exposed to my musical fumblings!!! :D

Re: Garageband Connections

I'll soon be recording choons using my Legacy, as soon as I get my cables for my shiny Mac!

Re: Garageband Connections

Not sure if you'll need Firewire. I read something a while back stating that USB 2.0 is equal in speed to Firewire. But, I read it on the Interweb, so there ya go.

I've used USB-MIDI devices for years (M-Audio MIDISport UNO) and haven't detected any abnormal lag. Then again, that was straight MIDI triggering, not audio. Audio always ran in through the 1/8" soundcard connector.

Re: Garageband Connections

Any recommendations for an audio to USB connector/cable??

AS long as you don't get nasty cheap ones most will do the trick fine.

Garage band is a good place to start with sequencing software as it's pretty easy to use, but the functionality is pretty limited once ya up and running.

Re: Garageband Connections

Yeah, I'm thinking of giving Logic Express a blast once I get going. I've seen a Behringer guitar-USB connector that seems ok for the money...

Re: Garageband Connections

Yeah, it's a new one. So I should be able to plug straight in to the headphone socket then? I could just run my V-Amp straight into it and use Garageband that way...

Re: Garageband Connections

stevie, is it a new one?!

just try a 1/4 inch to headphone adaptor! the headphone and mic sockets are the same (dumb, i know).

look what you can buy!

they're the same?! that is dumb.

it's hella cheapo, but the imic external soundcard is handy. usb on one side, mic and headphone inputs on the other. just go from the vamp into the mic input, and you'd still have a headphone jack to use.

Yeah, seen a couple of those too. That might do the trick if plugging my V-Amp into the headphone socket doesn't work.

Re: Garageband Connections

I use a Mbox mini which came with Pro tools LE (I don't really used the Pro tools). I bought the Mbox mainly for its ability to handle microphones. I record my acoustic a lot. I have a Bheringer Vamp also and I connect both outputs to the Mbox mini then the Mbox which is USB powered connects to my Mac. I also have a pair of monitors that hook up the the Mbox. I have stereo input & can pan my signals left & right if I choose. I plug my headphones into the Vamps for monitoring as I am recording. Works OK, but not great. I would like to be able to assign what I hear in the phones but I can't seem to do that with Garageband. Overall for general basic ideas and things of that nature Garageband is ok!

Re: Garageband Connections

Yeah, I want to use Garageband to get me started. I'll probably look to get Logic at Christmas.
