Anyone know wut amp he used to get that smooth mellow tone in I still got the blues and the loner?

I know he used an early 90's re-issue of a Marshall JTM45, a Les Paul and a Marshall Guv'nor Distortion pedal on the entire 'Still Got The Blues' album.
I believe 'The Loner' was recorded with either a Charvel or Jackson guitar with Floyd Rose Trem and EMG pickups. I don't know what amplifier was used though

I thought he played through LP's too, not floyd equipped guitars although he would definitely have some. Its just that every pic of him i've ever seen has had him playing a les paul, and his tone sounds pretty "fat gibson" like. Someone once said that he was using a soldano, but i wouldnt think he was using one, id think he was using "good" marshalls.

He used to use LP's when he was in Thin Lizzy, and also during most of his Blues years. In the 80's he played mainly 'Superstrat' style guitars, which is during the time that he recorded 'The Loner'.
His stage setup has changed from Marshall's to Fenders, to Soldano's (clean channel only) back to a mix of a Marshall DSL50 and a Fender amp (can't remember the exact model).

Still Got the Blues For You is a Les Paul...probably Peter Green's old Les Paul. I've heard he uses Soldanos for some things. I'm not really a Gary Moore fan (I think he overplays...) but I think I can get real close to that tone with a nice Les Paul and a great tube amp...a 50 watt Marshall cranked all the way up to "patent applied for" would do the trick. Maybe add a DS-1 for even more saturation... Lew

Yes... Gary played Les Pauls in the Thin Lizzy days... then he was a hardcore vintage Strat player for the first part of his solo career... I saw him live and was backstage during his "Loner" period... he was playing single humbucker Charvel's with EMG or Duncan Custom pickups as well as his main Red vintage Strat that was his main guitar for many years... his amp setup was an old JTM45 and a small box 50 watt Marshall with 3 Ibanez pedals (TS10 Tube Screamer/Digital Delay/Digital Chorus)... he used a JTM45 COMBO and the "Peter Green" Les Paul for Still Got The Blues record with the original Guv'Nor pedal... for the Blues tour he used a Soldano head as can clearly be seen in the live concert video...
I agree Lew... he overplays at times, but he does have certain moments of glory that are wonderful... kinda like George Lynch of Dokken fame...
His last few CD's have been EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTING... just like George Lynch... maybe they are related?

I remember reading in interviews that Marshall asked him to try out a prototype re-issue of a JTM45 amp (which became the main JTM45 re-issue in the early 90's) and that is what he used on the @Still Got the Blues' album.
My bad, I forgot about the old Strat he used during his solo career (and still uses in the studio).

I do too. Just to much of a good thing , IMO. Great tone tho. A little restraint wouldn't have hurt...you don't want to go straight to the climax. Leave yourself somewhere to go so you can build your solo. That's what I like anyway. His personality goes straight to the orgasm without much development or foreplay!

Whatever you do, don't get "A Different Beat". I took it back the day I bought it. I was the "Still Got The Blues" mode, and "Beat" isn't. "Back To The Blues" has some good stuff on it. I like "Had Enough Of The Blues" as well as "The Prophet". His CD "Scars" was too hard-edged for me.
