GAS - The times they are a changing

Wattage

High Voltologist
Really have made some wholesale changes to my sound over the past year and I'm finding I am more and more interested in guitars I've never used much before.

I want guitars that are a little more offbeat in some way that have their own thing going on sonically as well as stylistically. 'Birds, Ric's and Mosrites are high on the list right now.

Thinking a Hallmark 60 Custom and a lefty Eastwood Stormbird are on the shortlist.

Flip that Stormbird upside down maybe drop in some mini-hums with a Maestro and make a screamer out of it.
The Hallmark 60 in Orange Krate has me gassing like krazy right now and if I ditch my LP I imagine I'll grab a 620 Ric. Lord when does chasing your tail end???

A 12 string Ric is hard to beat! :-)

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

It is called "getting old", and I have been through the same thing in the past few years with gear, among other things :)

I dig the bird with the P90s...never did care for Mosrites or Rick guitars (basses are another story) . Butt hey, this is your decline into the ranks of the elderly, not mine, so get what floats your boat Scott! ;)

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

I'd go for the Hallmark.

I think I am going to, for some reason I can't pull the trigger though. I am pretty sure it is because I can't get my hands on one to play first. Always a tricky position to be in.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

It's what happens when you start to tire of the usual classics, and metal axes ain't your thing.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

Yeah "Metal" guitars were never really my thing though I did have an Ironbird once, with a Kahler even, hah! Maybe some of it is boredom or maybe even age but I've always had a thing for the offbeat.

I had the DiPinto Mach IV recently which was all right but as soon as I laid my hands on it I knew I should have gotten one with a trem. Between the lack of a tremolo and the horrible position of the pickup selector switch it didn't last long which is a shame it was a pretty nice guitar otherwise. I traded that for my Jazzmaster which has just absolutely changed my world. The very open layout is great and I have never been so comfortable using a trem in my life. So now I am looking for guitars that bring something similar to the table. I've looked for another Jazzer but I haven't found one I like anywhere near as much as this cheapo J Mascis sig, dumb luck maybe?

One person on here has a lefty, I think.

Original Mosrites had skinny necks and small frets, which has been 'fixed' on the Hallmarks. From what I've read about them, people like them very much. The colours offered are certainly lovely, couldn't decide which I like most.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

hey, I'm with you on doing a mini pickup guitar!
they are not the everyday choice, but have a sound that sits well in a mix, and is pretty versatile

for me, I'm also considering a custom build specifically for slide, with maybe a lap steel & Teisco type pickup combo ... something like this, except with a tele body:

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

You're about 7 trades away from the Wangcaster, give or take a NGD.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

Welp it's done the Orange Krate has been ordered.

Curly I am so thinking of dropping one of the those Teisco pickups in the neck of that 'bird with either a Ric single coil or a mini hum in the bridge. It's like you're a mind reader my friend.

Can't wait, well I can but you know.......

Here's one I found a pic of online SWEETNESS!!!!

I like the orange ... I got some Testors lacquer in a similar color, used it to finish a pedal ... they come in small cans for model cars, but I've considered finishing a body with them 'cause I like the colors ... well, plus ... it's lacquer! :)

Damn, that's hot. Though they should've either done a matching headstock or black plastics to match the black headstock on that one. No big deal though - sweet looking guitar.

When do you expect to have it?

Nice score. I have my eye on a 620-12 for my next guitar, but I may go 330-12.
A solidbody is more practical though.

I think the 620 is one of the best looking guitars out there...especially Jetglo.

Let us know how that Hallmark works out. I have also been thinking about a Mosrite or Mosrite clone for down the road.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

My friend's studio just picked up a 620/12 they love it. My only hang up with the Ric is that they feel a little tiny. That and I'd probably have to refret it and take the finish off the board right way but yeah in terms of looks not much is sweeter.

As for the Orange Crate, I wouldn't mind if it had a matching headstock or a white one. I definitely wanted the white plastics, I love the creamsicle sort of look to it plus I have a white Orange head sitting on an orange RockNRollAmps 4x10 cab so it looks like it was made to go together.

Bob from Hallmark says I should expect it on Tuesday, so very psyched.

There are differences between the Hallmark/Shade and the Mosrites subtle to some but huge to Mossy aficionados apparently. The Hallmark has larger frets and a larger neck overall, the trem is much different and the pups are wound more like P-90's than the originals plus I guess they have a little different placement. I am sure there are a few other things but I wasn't hung up on having an original.

If it is everything I hope for I am sure this one won't be all that far behind.

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

Hey Curly that's a pretty cool slide guitar. I love playing slide but have a harder time finding a good tone with electrics. I feel a lot more comfortable on my Martin D18. It just sounds great. I've been playing slide on a Tele as well out of all my electrics I think this one works best. It has a Strat PU in the neck and a Tele in the bridge. It's working....

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

I have a regular US Fender tele set up for slide -- I like the solid feel and tuning stability of the string-through bridge. Basically, I just switched the strings out for 11s and raised the saddles a tad. Works great!

Re: GAS - The times they are a changing

Guitar made it here but with some issues, we'll see what happens
