***GASP*** Is this true....

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

All right guys - this is about ME. Take it outside. I know more than either of you about 70's LP's.

If I got it - could/should I change it up to the Spacemans fave cream rings & Dimarzios or leave it as is????

THe guitar looks awesome as is - changing it would ruin it IMO. But you're such a big Ace fan, maybe it would look better to you if you set it up more like one of his. I wouldn't - I'd just buy a cheaper Epi Les Paul and change the pup rings and pups in that.
Leave the Black Beauty as it is, a thing of, well, beauty. :)

First...get it...then we'll talk about changes. I think after you get it, it needs to spend a week with every one that answered you on this thread (kinda' like uncles..so to speak). Then after all of us have played it, you can fly us all to NY city for some great pizza and we'll discuss changes at that time over a few cold ones.....OK? I mean how can we presume to suggest changes without......well you get the drift.....:joke::eyecrazy::joke:

I'm wondering why it doesn't already have DiMarzios..... :scratchch

- Ace didn't use it much so left the stock pups?

- Someone put the stock pups back?

- It never belonged to Ace?

We need to be told!

Think I'll enquire about shipping to the UK while I'm at it :naughty:

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

Aceman, I hope you get it...blueman 335 put it best when he said it's your legacy! YA!!

The ebay post says:

" The guitar is in original condition as it came from Ace w/ the exception of a pickup cover added by Ace’s family member."

I wonder if they put cover(s) back on, and perhaps there are dimarzio's underneath?

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

Aceman, a better question than whether you should buy it or not, is whether you could let someone else buy it?

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

How come the hardware on a 30 year old guitar is still gold? The gold hardware on my Epi Black Beauty has tarnished so bad it's half silver.

Whilst I love Asian built guitars, it may have something to do with the quality of the GOld Plate.

Anyway, I have a shop locally that re-plates parts. It's not a copper-bottom marker of age. Anyway if Ace gave me a signed guitar I'd lock it away and save it 'til the rain poured! Which I guess is what's happened here. Looking at the pics available and offer of more, I'd say it's the real deal!

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

well- I looked at the gold and I don't think it's that pristine. Also-over time that cheepo Norlin gear could have easily tarnished a bit. More if played. I've got a request in for details and the additional pics.

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

I dunno - how much did Ace actually USE this guitar? Did he record any Kiss songs with it? If he just had it for a couple of months, barely touched it then sold it on or whatever I don't see much point in paying over the odds for it. I think you'd be better spending the cash on either a Gibby or Epi Les Paul and doing it all up EXACTLY like one of Ace's from your favourite period.
I'm assuming you haven't alreday done that of course....

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

It is widely known that Ace used super distortions, but it is reasonable to assume that Ace would've had some stock LPs, and LPs with different hot rodded pickups for variety or whatever, I wouldn't be surprised at all to know that he kept that one as-is. Oh, and Aceman, this could be the crown jewel of your sig.:notworthy

For the record - I have not done one up yet. Looking for the right guitar/price/cash etc...And I always expected to do a Cherry Sunburst.

You do make a VERY valid point about the "couple months" and gave it away. Ace had LOTS of guitars back in the day. I may need to rethink this. WHich is it that I'd really be interested in- "owned" by Ace - or Played by Ace....

Hmmmm- That helps take some of GAS pain away for the moment. Good thoughts my Scottish Bro!

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

Happy to help! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Black Beauty in general, thats why I got an Epi version, but why pay extra just because Ace Frehley had one sat in a cupboard for a few weeks?
Get a MUCH cheaper Epi LP, some custom pup rings and DiMarzios. And some platforms and make up. ;)

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

If you don't get this guitar:

1) you're no longer part of SDUGF as "Aceman"

2) come back to SDUGF as "I'm such a big Ace Frehley fan that I let a chance to own one of his guitars pass me by"

What are you waiting for? Go get it! :fing2:

Besides... you don't need one of those "clownburst" ratty looking LP Customs.. this is a chance to own a Black Beauty owned by the man... and let's face it here, you can't mess with a black beauty... it's the most perfect Gibson color scheme ever.

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

i'm always unsure about stars guitars being sold on EBAY... most legit star's instruments get sold at auctions or thru www.rockstarsguitars.com

on a side note, many Who items have come up signed over the years on EBAY... i love the ones that have all 4 signatures in the early 80's albums with Moon's autograph... he died in 78... a signed guitar would not mean much to me unless Pete signed it for me in front of me...

carefull on this one

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

I'm guessing this guy may not know about that sight. I do have a request for more info. I'm certainly in a more objective frame of mind than when I first saw this....but still...

I'll keep you posted!

Re: ***GASP*** Is this true....

Man, 2200 dollars? Get it!

And if you are not happy with it after a few months, let me know, and I will save up the money to buy it from you :D

A 1970s Les Paul Black Beauty for 2200dollars!!!!

In Denmark, that is give away price, and it was owned by Ace Frehley. And seriously, why would Ace buy a guitar and not play it?

Get it man :)

JohnnyGuitar --> Yeah, that was blind stupidity for a moment there :D I am looking for a real 1978 Custom, and if I find a good one, I am most likely gonna get it. :)

So what if he did play it? He probably played a million guitars along with using loads of toothbrushes and lots of pairs of socks. If he never used the guitar to actually RECORD, or at least play some gigs, then I really wouldn't be spending much cash on it. No more than what a normal Black Beauty goes for anyway.
