Threw some zebras and amber knobs on the '78, I'm digging it like this.

The zebras try to give it a clean, tight look, but the amber knobs try to give it a softer look. I think they are fighting each other. Either look would be great, but not both in the same guitar.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

Very cool. I went with a set of Slash double blacks, black pickup rings and a black tip switch. There is somethinng very sexy about an all black guitar....

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

Now that the binding is yellow, the cream in there is just epic win every which way!

I'd have went Black Speed knobs 1, or Black top hat gold dome knobs 2....but that's me.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

It had black speed knobs, old ones from the 70's, but I wanted to make it look a little more like a standard, while still being a custom. Knobs are an easy switch back.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

The zebras look cool. The knobs look weird to me though. I would have gone with gold speeds myself with it being a Custom. And in some eras, gold Speeds came on Standards.

Black Customs are so cool.

I like it. Be interesting to see what the cream pick guard & cream pick-up rings would look like on it.

I'm thinking about doing black pick-up rings, black pick guard, black switch ring & black knobs on my Gold top, like Steve Stevens.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

I really tend to dislike speed knobs in general, too bulky. This particular year came with black top hats with gold inserts.

Her's the knobs I had on it, took them from a '78 SG.

Now that I think about it, the original style might be Goldielocks here, just the right amount of gold to accent the look without being over the top with all gold.

Here we go, had some in the parts drawer. I think it strikes the perfect balance adding a touch of gold without being overbearing with all gold knobs, and its period-correct since these are what custom came with stock in '78.

Yeah, those are cool. I've got some with silver inserts laying around. Got them for my Hamer EchoTone but I ended up liking gold speeds on it better.

Blackout!! Yep!!

TC,
I didnt think Id like the knobs so much, but they work well with the switch tip and aged binding. The zebras look awesome!

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

Damn that looks good with either set to me. I have black speed knobs and I hate them. I almost put gold knurled on but I'm rethinking that now.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

I don't know...

After seeing your pics with different knobs, I have to say that I like the amber knobs best. But it's the pups that bother me...the white really looks out of place. I like the original look of the black Custom with all gold metal including pup covers. My '69 Custom was the most gorgeous guitar...black body, neck & pickguard with all metal (including pickup covers) in gold. I think it came with the black tophats with gold inserts, I don't remember for sure, but it would look fantastic with those amber tophats.

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

Dunno, I prefer black speedknobs over tophats... Those just always look a little TOO vintagey, at least on my stuff. Speedknobs, now, those are sleek and sexy

Re: Gave the 'ol girl a facelift

Since the guitar is positioned in front of a tweed amp, it is definitely getting encouragement to look the part (vintage Custom)...black tophats with gold inserts; gold covered pups.
