Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

You can also employ a trick Wattage told me about.:naughty: Just leave the house with a empty guitar case and return with your new Tele. Freak'in Brilliant ! Isn't it. :laugh2:

That man's a genius! :D

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

I'm not really GASing for stuff right now. I'd like to get a better amp, but I don't really know what I want. I start to get bored when I go into a music store nowadays, everyone has the same old stuff. There's only about three music stores that I go to on a regular basis, and it's Fender, Crate, one or two Mesas or a couple of Marshalls (most of which are too big for me, and priced accordingly).

Now building another guitar....I get excited contemplating the possibilities! I think that's the reason i'm bored with the music store guitars. I always find something I don't like or want to change about them.

I need some cash for my gear fund too.

Just make sure it's the same color as one of your other guitars. Most wife's couldn't tell the difference from a Tele to a Les Paul. But if it's a another color... You'll be busted!

I tried this a couple of years ago when I replaced my strat copy with the real thing. She didn't notice the change from a rosewood fretboard to maple, (they were both red) but one night when I was (overconfidently) playing it under her nose she asked "that's a Fender?" I was surprised she noticed!

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

I'm slowly getting to the point where it's no so much fun anymore! I've got plenty of gear...I actually feel guilty about the amount of gear i've got....I just can't buy anything else without feeling guilt....I have the feeling that the celtic amp I'm getting will be my last major purchase for a long time

When I used to have an extra few hours somewhere, I'd go gear shopping. Looking for cool old amps, steals of a deal on guitars, that sort of stuff.

Now it bores me. I'm pretty happy with my guitars, no real gas there. Old amps don't interest me any longer, I'm happy with what I've built.

Maybe go look for old pedals? Nah. I am not much of a pedal ho.

The hunt, the chase isn't there. No thrill of the chase.

I do get excited about bulding something new though. I guess that's still a lot of fun. But, I've not been into any guitar store in quite some time now.

Scott:

Maybe, it is as several other posts have stated - You just have plumb run out of GAS...

Only known cure to guitar slingers, GET OUT THERE AND PLAY!!!

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

Now I've sorted out my guitar setup, the stuff I GAS about is recording gear - ie, building Neve 1272 and UA 1108 preamp modules. I still enjoy tweaking my Plexi though, that's quite fun. And the odd pedal project is nice, but I've not got much time at the moment to build them unfortunately.

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

My setup will probably do me for the next 10 years. I'd like to have some new speakers in my amp and maybe another cab to sit under it.

Beyond that, my Rickenbacker was the last nail in the guitar coffen for me. My tone is like no one elses, and to me that's priceless.

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

It's weird, but I feel the same as Scott and GJ, I just don't care about other stuff anymore. Guitars, effects, amps... I'm just "ehhh" about. I have a pretty killer rig that really works for me. The only thing I'm debating on now is what to get for my Bogner Shiva, I'm balancing between a 2x12'' OS cab and a 4x10'' cab. Decisions, decisions...

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

Funny that this comes up...

I've kinda done the same thing. I have gear as nice as I could ever want, and in abundance so much that I'm finding that every so often I'm just unloading something that I'm not really using. Slowly the herd is getting thinner.

My brother is a consumate gear hound. At times it gets tough to talk to him because he has been so focused on it and I've kind of gotten bored with it. I now find I check CraigsList and eBay more out of habit than for actual need or want of anything.

The whole thing used to be a passionate spark in my life and it's not really that anymore. I find I'm more into some of my other hobbies, brewing beer, fly-fishing as well as spending time with my family and 6 month old son.

My most recent venture into Guitar Center was less than 5 minutes: I needed something, went in, got it, and was out of there. The place aggravated me before, that trip only confirmed it.

Side note: Hey Kev....I was rocking on my mp3 player on my lunch break today & this funka$$ tune came on....made me look to see who it was:wink:

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

Now I just lust after amp designs I've not tried to build yet...

I am so going to build a 4xEL84 Matchless C-30 clone and a Clubman clone as well. They are a coming. That's what I gas about.

Ahhhh, a lil KC and the Sunshine band, nothing makes a day funkier!!:drive:

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

It's probably more a case of "been there done that" as opposed to boredom. I know I was in search of certain tones for a long time and now that the tone-jones is satisfied why should I waste money on something that I really don't need?

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

I just spoke with a good forum bro that has gotten into the guitar custom bulding bidness. He doesn't want it to be a huge announcement here, but now I'm thinking about my *next* guitar. Maybe in the next year I can figure out what I really want/need and will place an order.

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

I know what'cha mean Scott. I have everything I need and then some.

I am looking for a nice AUTOHARP though!

I keep getting outbid on the model I'm looking for when they turn up on Ebay!

BTW, are you still thinking of coming to the Dallas Guitar Show next month? Bruce will be showing off his new Aurora Amp and he's got it available now with spring reverb.

I'll be there demoing Bruce's amps...and selling some Duncan pickups and pedals. :)

Re: Gear Shopping Isn't Fun Anymore

I'm not sure when that is to be exact. My son has been unofficially invited to several college football spring practices. We're heading out to west texas on friday the 30th for an April 1st practice. Then Rice University and UofH are having their annual spring games on the afternoon, then the night of April 8th. On April 15th, we're going to another school as well. (the marketing of my son continues... free education...)

The only reason I'd make it to DFW is to see you guys. Otherwise the show tends to bore me sligthly. Maybe next year I'll build up 10 amps and show up in a booth.

Wow...that would be fun! :arms: We'll have a friendly shoot-out...I'd love to heard some of your amps Scott. And even more, I'd love to meet cha!

I don't really like most guitar shows either, BTW...I've seen most everything several times over. And everything's so expensive.
