General amp advice/opinions wanted

All right, I'm looking for a little advice here. First, I'll give you a little bit of my background and then open the thread up to discussion/opinions.

I'm a bedroom player. I've been playing for about 20 years but I'm not really interested in playing in a band right now. There are a ton of guys out there way better than I am, but I know how to play. I usually stick with some heavier stuff ranging from old school Van Halen and Iron Maiden to newer stuff like Dream Theater and a lot of the European power metal bands out there now. Also, I'm getting ready to enter the last year of clinic on my way to graduating as a Dr. of Chiropractic. So, the time I have to play is not as abundant as it once was.

I'm very simple when it comes to my gear. I would much rather plug a guitar straight into an amp and use a pedal or two than to have a rack that would make John Petrucci proclaim me as his god. For the last few years, I've spent most of my time and money buying/selling/trading guitars so that I have a nice quality arsenal. However, I don't spend that much time with amplifiers or effects. I've got a block letter edition 5150 half stack that has sat in my closet for more years than I can count. Since I live in a townhouse, I play through my Flextone III so I don't disturb the neighbors.

What I've been thinking is to unload a lot of my gear to fund some new, better and more functional amplification (keeping the guitars that have true sentimental value). With that money, I can invest in a really good sounding amp that I can use at home and not have to worry about the police banging down my door because I'm too loud. The other alternative is to keep everything I've got and stay with this situation for the next couple of years. Don't get me wrong, the sound I get from my Flextone is all right, but I'm always searching for the best possible tone I can get out of my two hands. And let's face it, as much as I love that 5150 it is way too impractical to keep. I've been on the fence for years on whether or not to sell it since I've had it for 13 years. It just does't get used at all. I've got the guitars down, and I think the only thing holdng me back is my choice of amplification.

If I decide to liquidate and invest in some really good sounding amplification equipment, I would be open to suggestions as far as what to look for. I've been looking at the THD website because the Univalve intrigues me. But, anyone who has opinions on some great lower output tube amps that can get me a great sound at bedroom levels will get my attention.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read all of this and more thanks to anyone who offers their opinions/advice.

I think that you're on the right track . . . If I were in your situation, I'd look around for a couple of lower watt amps (univalve, bumbox, etc.) and buy a couple of different speaker cabinets (closed back, open back, 1 X 12, 2 X 10) and you can experiment your way to low wattage tonal heaven.

Re: General amp advice/opinions wanted

you should just get a line 6 toneport. it is really cheap and sounds good. good for recording. you could sell your other modeler. tube is never really gonna sound good at low volumes no matter if you use a hot plate, 6 watts or whatever. always a compromise. just have a tube amp for jamming in band settings. IMHO.

I disagree. I can crank my 7 watt el-84 amp and get some nice natural distortion without bugging the neighbors. Personally I have yet to find a modeller that I would rather record than a mic'd tube amp. Just because it's a tube amp doesn't mean it's deafening . . . the speakers efficiency will change the volume of an amp as much as the wattage.

Why do people say this? I'm on my 2nd tube amp and so far, both sound excellent even at whispering volumes.

. . . talking a bout the lil BuMBOX, do look into it !

Even i have GAS for one over the "new" 15watter Orange Tiny Terror (wich i think is overpriced any ways)

Re: General amp advice/opinions wanted

Well I would go a totally different route. You are into EPM this will give all those scnadinavia/german tones http://rocksolidamps.com/description.php?II=31&UID=2006112418242171.131.196.8
It gives you a lot of tweakability it is really small, just plug this baby into EFX loop of some good quality 30watt combo and you are set. Peavey comes to mind ... I mean this will definately give all the tones of genres you like and it will take minimum of space.

Re: General amp advice/opinions wanted

I dont know how quite he needs it and if he will be pushing the tubes that much. I cant loudly strum an acoustic where I am at without my neighbors hearing it. but with a toneport you can record and no-one would complain. At such a level if I played with a tube amp all I would hear is the preamp. Yes, if it was louder sound levels allowed due to neighbors I could benefit from one of those cool oranges - I hear they sound great. Ya there are alternatives depending on what the sound limits are at the townhouse.
