General ideas / Tips for a happier guitar life.

What tips do you think are valuable to share with us here? Things that maybe not all of us do, even if it's something simple.
I'll give you the most important one that I've been applying for the last 3 months or so, and man does it pay off:

ALWAYS, AND I DO MEAN "ALWAYS", WIPE YOUR STRINGS AFTER PLAYING!

The oldest set of strings in one of my guitars at the moment is around 2 months old, and I swear it hasn't worn much from new, if at all.
I'll normally kill a set in 6 weeks. Not anymore!
Even if it's a 2 minute tuning check, I'll always wipe all strings from underneath and then by the top, with a rag made from an old T-shirt.

Friends at my place, eating fries and BBQ and they wanna play my Strat? Wash those hands first and we're cool.
Gunk doesn't make it to my guitars. It takes just a bit of discipline, and you'll save yourself money and hassle.

TIP #2:

When checking your intonation, always check notes the way you'll play them.
I noticed many times I'd set my intonation just right, and then many notes would be sharp because of the pressure I apply when playing the way I play, which is a lot less delicate than when checking 12th fret notes with a tuner.
So I might intentionally intonate some strings a bit flat, knowing that I can turn into a bit of an orangutan when playing. :D

What's your tips?

Some of my guitars sound better if not all the strings are precisely @ 440, especially the wound strings. Hunt with your ear and your guitar will tell you what it wants.

Learn to play like yourself.

By all means learn the playing styles and patterns of your idols, but at the end of the day, ABSORB them, don't mimic them.

The world doesn't need another Vaughan/Malmsteen/EVH/Clapton wannabe, it needs you being your unique you.

On a more general note - learn to setup your own guitars. Period.

Wipe down the bridge hardware after playing too! I recently bought an old 1988 JEM77FP and the bridge is in MINT condition. I asked the previous owner what his secret was, and all he said was "I just wipe down the strings and the bridge after playing!". The guy lives in NYC so we all know how the weather is there, and the bridge looks newer than my mid 2000s RG1570 which has most of the bridge finish corroded off, all because I do not wipe down.

Don't do it: it will always leave your wallet empty...

Great stuff so far. Wiping strings is huge. Can be tough when gigging (quick changes) but I always try to pull it back out to give it a wipe (jokes!)

-Don't believe everything you read on the internet (ironic, isn't it?)
-And remember, 75% of people on forums just recommend what they are using (this forum is much better for this than others)
-That change in tone cap will not be the miraculous missing piece to finding 'your tone'
-If you want to get better you actually need to practice, not just noodle
-Spend more time playing than looking at gear, you will sound better than that pedal could ever make you
-Go jam. And learn how to jam. JAM!

Ok... "wiping down strings"

At the risk of sounding stupid, old t-shirt, nothing else?

Micro fibre towel works great, just like the ones you use on your vehicle.

Yes sir. I know there's liquid "string cleaners" around you could add, but just a dry, clean rag from a t-shirt has proven to be good enough for me.
I tried microfiber towels as suggested, but they tend to leave too much fiber around, while an old t-shirt doesn't. So they didn't work for me.

Make sure to drag and squeeze the string from top to bottom, so that you'll collect the grease from under all strings it as well, and from the top of the 1st fret to the very end near the bridge.
It's boring to do that every single time, but I do wash my hands often and I'm surprised that I always get a good amount of crap out of the strings.

Have a broad, musical education (listen to many types of music). Also, try learning another instrument besides guitar.
