Generic Phaser Sounds? Yech!

I've owned a Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter for a couple of months now and can only figure out how to get a good swell type sound of it The problem with the "swell" sound is that it only works for spacey effects and lack definition. Rather than hearing individual notes I just hear the overall chord sound ring out with the phase tacked on above it. It sounds too generic...which I can't stand...

What I am looking for however, is how to get a kind of squisy, really light phase. I've heard it on Sublime's "Burritos" and that's exactly the sound I'm looking for. My phase settings lack definition, and I want to use the phaser for single note lines. How would I set the phaser for this kind of purpose?

There's too much of a generic phase sound coming out of the PH-3 right now and I can't stand it anymore. I've been messing around with it for months and can't find that kind of sound...it's driving me crazy!

I suggest putting it in the effects loop of your amp and dialing in just a touch of it into your direct sound.

I had the same problem with my Boss Phaser. It just had too many knobs on it for mew and I got tired of fooling with it. I got an MXR Phase 90 and ii sounds awesome. It only has one knob so you can't mess it up :)

You might also think about a Flanger, instead of a Phase Shifter. They're similar effects, but there seems to be more depth to a flange sound than a phase shift. The suggestion regarding running through the effects loop is a good one, too.

Good idea...that's exactly what I need, "a touch"!

Oh man, I love the PH-3! All those beautiful little knobs, differant stage phasers, rise/fall options, that cool green paint...
That being said, I do like the Phase 90 a helluva lot!

I've owned two; sold one and the other is broken. Didn't like them that much. The thing for me was there that was too much depth to the flange sound. Thanks for the suggestion, though...
Looks like I'm going with the FX loop!

Thanks much y'all!
