Getting a feel for the Forum

So, I'm new and wanted to ask a very fundamental question (s).

Seeing as how a lot of people answer to questions they make it seem as if though they own a lot of pickups which they put into a lot of guitars.
So:
How many pickups do you guys own?
How many guitars?
Do you stop swapping pickups when you find the tone or do you treat it more like a hobbyist who makes models and switch pickups all the time because you like switching them more than playing?
When you do all the switching, do you have any fancy things done on pickups (such as coil splitting/tapping/phase wiring/etc) that get in the way of pickup switching because I would think it'd be a near nightmare to get my coil splitted JB and SH2 out and into another guitar.
Does the smell of solder remind of you good times wiring your pickups?
Oh, so many more...

And this brings me to another thing: I just finished reading a 4 page thread that was solely on the JB and how it's a love/hate thing. I've noticed that there are Floyd rose fanatics and people who would rather kill you than play on rosewood or mahogony.

And for the record, I just have my Legacy with its current pickups and the bridge SSL-1 that made way for the Twangbanger.

Welcome aboard man.

Let's see to answer your question..

I've got 8 guitars, and 5 of them are loaded with SD pups. 1 I'm selling so it only has 1 SD in it, another has teh stock 64 P90s, and the last has a Sd in the neck and a PRS pup out of my PRS in the bridge.

I've only got 1 pup not in use it's a Custom Shop Duncan that's a Distortion/Custom hybrid with a large ceramic magnet.

Normally I'll find the tone for a guitar and I just leave the pups in it. Time changes our ears and tastes, I changed pups in my tele and the bridge slot of my PRS because of that.

I like humbuckers to operate at full power, and single coils to operate in the regular manner. In fact I like single conductor wires on my buckers! I do think taps on single coils can be very cool.

Yes, most people DO either love or hate the JB. I'm a fan of low-medium output pups I really like A2 pups I'm one of the guys that would like the JB if it was squishier. I like the sounds other guys get, but I can make it sing like other.

Also another thing you'll hear is lots of talk about MJ. She's Seymour's winding ace in the CS, and her pups are special. I've got to CS buckers MJ wound and they are special.

10 guitars, most of them loaded with duncans. (one set of dimarzio, two fender, and one PRS). I've tried the 59's, Seths, Custom, PGates, Alnico2 pro, C5, JB, and maybe a few more I can't remember. Out of all of them I like my Seth Lovers best. Once you've tried one or two, its hard to stop....

I have 2 guitars. A 335 MIJ copy and a MIM Strat
I have a SD Seth Lover in the neck of the 335 and I am ordering a Phat Cat neck to try.

I am learning electronics as a hobby and enjoy doing pickup/pot changes ( 335's are a pain to work on...but it the challenge is fun) for myself and friends. I'm also trying to build a small tube amp.....slow process.

I'm looking for a certain tone that I always hear when others/friends play but can never quite manage to get it myself. I think that this is a common problem given what I read in the posts on this forum.

The smell of solder represents relaxing times at my electronics workbench...not always productive, but fun and away from the routine tasks of daily life.

Just out of curiosity, where are you located in Poland?
I've been to Poland twice (my wife's family are in Poland).

Haha! What an original way to introduce yourself.:laugh2: Anyway, I've got five guitars, almost all with Duncans in the bridge and DiMarzio's in the neck pos. Don't know why, but that combination seems to appeal to me. And rather kill you than play rosewood or Mahogany? Nahhh! I'll only kill you if you steal one of my guitars:chairfall

Welcome Markk--

I think that the one thing most forum members have in common is that they care about tone and are always looking for more/better/perfect/different, etc. If you've got a magical, elusive tone in your head that you can't realize with your current set-up, these people can help you get closer because, as a group, they've tried everything. And they care.

I am such a poor player I don't even enjoy playing much anymore. But that doesn't stop me from having 15 guitars in various states of disrepair. I am finding the setup and modification much more fun these days. After a while swapping pickups is like an obese person at a buffet. Even if you don't like anything you at least have to try it.

A few months ago, I put a JB on the bridge of my Ibanez (first aftermarket pickup I've bought), plug it into my Roland, and have lived in tone heaven since. I love what I'm getting from it! I wanna put another JB in my Epiphone as soon as I can. :fingersx:

My setup is very very humble, but I'm slowly improving it. And the Seymour Duncan JB helped me a lot. That, and the massive (but still humble, too :) ) knowledge I've acquired from guys like Gearjoneser, Zerberus, Artie and other guitar gurus. Plus they're very nice people.

On a short summary:

Two guitars, one amp, I'm staying with the JB because I love it, I don't fiddle with splitting, coil tap, rotary switches or nothing that fancy. And I hate the smell of solder because I suck at understanding wirings. In fact, I don't. :laugh2:

So yeah... enjoy your stay Markk. And keep an eye on your wallet! This place can get expensive...

I got three git-tars

Fender Stat... in the modding process

Schecter A-1 with a Sh2 in the neck and a Custom in the bridge

Schecter C-1 classic which comes stock with the Sh2.... but the bridge pup is just unmentionable it is *gasp* a jb. As soon as I get some money together, the internals of that guitar will be laid bare and NEW LIFE will be inserted.

dont listen to those JB lovers, they'll corupt your mind.

Welcome!

I have 18 guitars.

Most have DiMarzios, one has Duncans, one has EMGs, one has GFS and 5 are bone stock, one of those being a Performance Custom that has never been unsoldered and it sounds so good the way it is, I leave it. :)

I own 18 Duncans,
about 20 Diamrzios
2 EMGs
2 GFS
3.5 Gibson Dirty Fingers
and a whole mess of various stock and aftermarket ones

6 guitars, 2 currently with duncans, 2 more going to have them soon. I'm not extremely experienced with all the SD's but I have a good base knowledge of pickups and guitars. It helps when you've got a 70's LP and '68 Twin Reverb lying around the house...

Welcome to the forum! As for your question, I personally have 15 guitars, some I like just the way they are, some have been reconfigured MANY MANY times with various pickups, Duncan, Dimarzio, EMG, Gibson, GFS, etc. Keeps me from burnin' stuff down!!!

You guys are right, it is addictive. When I bought my first pickup, the JB, I was floored. Sounded so much better than my strat copy and better than even the stock pickups on my Epiphone (which sounded way better than my strat copy). I then bought a lil' 59 for my Peavey strat copy. And this summer I put in a Jazz SH2 into the neck of my Epiphone custom (which has the JB). I'm dying to try Seth Lovers and some Hot and Cool Rails. I can't wait to get another guitar and it'll probably first be a semi-hollow body and then an SG type guitar. My wallet just isn't big enough for my plans yet.

To answer my own questions, I love wiring and soldering. My dad's an electrician so I've got the soldering equipment in Canada (I'm a Polish-Canadian studying medicine in Poland) and my fiancée's dad here in Poland is in the repair business of medical equipment, so he's got his fair shair of soldering tools. I've also coil splitted my JB and Jazz. Smell of solder also reminds of a whole different world where no one can intrude. (Funny enough, the smell of solder reminds me of burnt flesh in the operating room from the electric knife. Another little world of mine. :) )

I don't see myself swapping pickups in and out of guitars...but maybe one day...
