Getting back in the game, what's hot for tube combo amps??

See Lewguitar's Lee Jackson Amplification thread, may be the solution to 2 people's dilemnas.

Seeing as you are in the same situation as me (townhome/apt living) I'd almost think a 2x12 is too much amp.

Check out a Mesa Boogie F-30. $400-500 on ebay and has great cleans and very nice crunch. It's a very loud 1x12. From what I have heard clip wise the Mesa Express series don't have enough gain for what you wanted, but I guess you could boost it with a pedal.

I'm no amp expert, just a suggestion.

I agree totaly. A good class A/B much less class A tube amp that'll push 2-12's is propably too much for what you've decribed as you goals and living conditions. However, if you have not looked at a Dr.Z you might want to. They have several great 1-12 combo's that are in the 18 to 25 watt range that sound soooo sweet. The Carman Ghia, Maz18, Rt.66 all are super. They all have a little different feel and sound but all qualify as super tone machines. In terms of quality I have not found anything to match 'em. Check them out.

^ that's what i was going to say. 20 watts going thru 2x12 will be loud. how about the epiphone valve jr with some pedals to give it a more metal tone? i don't have one so i'm not sure this is possible. ???? but those epis seem to be very well liked tube amps and are real affordable. with your budget you could easily get it modded if need be to get it closer to what you want.

Yeah, this time I want a tube amp then can get metal tones without pedals, if you use pedals with a drive channel doesn;t it usually sound like garbage mash? Going pedals through clean channel is what I want to get away from. Those DrZ amps sound good, might be an option!

$2000 msrp = about $1200-1300 in most stores.

and that is a pretty decent sounding amp. my rythm guy has one. lead channel screams!! rythm channel has a fat switch. instant hetfield tone

$1200 is too much, maby if I can find one used...I don't want to invest serious money in am amp...yet. ;)
