Getting tape residue off of a watermark logo without ruining it?

Title says it all. I recently got a tele and someone thought it would be a good idea to put a sticker over the fender logo. The residue is still there. Normally I would use goo gone but I don't want the watermark damaged or removed.

What is the nicest way to do this?

Use another piece of tape that has a little more tack than the sticker had and just touch it/tap it to the residue and lift off until you get it all. Then wipe it with a damp cloth and dry after that.

Eucalyptus Oil.

Or try a wax & grease remover from an auto shop.

No joke, try some cooking oil and just rub at the residue with your finger. Might take a minute or two but oil will get rid of prettymuch any sticker residue. And obviously, the oil will clean up with soap and water.

The other piece of tape thing is hard to do. They were mailbox decal stickers so they were extremely well on there.

I tried the oil and it took off the top layer but the bottom layer is still there. I even let it soak for a while and it's not coming off.

I would have thought that the typical fender logo is clearcoated over.....I think its only the AVRI or perhaps only the custom shop reissues that have the decal over the clear (like the real vintage guitars).

So if I go at it with a paint scraper or something, it'll be fine?

It is cheap and it will get the job done. Use the right tool for the right job.

I would not use a scraper, ever.
If it has nitro, then lemon juice left for a minute or two, mill break down the adhesive. We use a spray called label off for removing labels. Smells like orange, and the active ingredient is citric acid, so I tried lemon and orange juice, direct from the fruit. It soaks through paper labels but plastic coated ones, it only eats at the edges where glue is, so once there is a piece lifted, keep working there. You say the top layer has come away so it could soak through.
You could get a new decal, from oldfret if it is a vintage. I use those for restoring oldies.

WD-40, Goo-Gone, Howard's Orange Oil, Lemon Oil, the Dunlop 65 Lemon Oil, or even their String Cleaner...and naptha--these should all work, and not damage your guitar--if the decal is UNDER the finish. There's another product called Goof Off--it is the best adhesive remover I've ever used, but not real sure I'd use it on a guitar, as it contains XYLENE.

Good luck,

Bill
