I highly agree. When I am tweaking whatever distortion setup I may be using at that time, I find invariably the majority of my knob tweaking concerns the EQ related knobs.

I have two different rigs, my amp rig and my POD.

My POD is too complicated to explain my thrash tone, but my amp rig is a Peavey Windsor with a MXR Custom Baddass 78 right in front.

Proco Rat.

The cool thing about the Rat was that it still produced a lot of punch when pushing a tube amp.

That said, a lot of the classic OD/distortion pedals were meant to push a hot tube amp harder. I'm not sure how the Rat would sound if it was the only source of dirt.

When I think thrash metal, I think Recto

When I hear a metal band with a Recto, I think "isn't this the last metal band I heard with a Recto?".

I thought the combo of JCM800 + 80's OD pedal de jour (TS9/RAT/Dist Plus) was the ticket to Thrash.

Not always. Slayer was THE 80's thrash band and they used Boss 10-band EQ's in front of their Marshalls (inverted scoop shape).

My method was JCM800 + EQ pedal with gain boost. Now I have the JVM, which can ape this sound rather well plugging straight in on OD1. :headbang:

Or my '85 Mesa MkIII in heat will deliver a different '80s thrash flavor. :headbang:

I personally never use pedals for crunch rhythm as it seems to take away from the purity, although I sometimes use them to fatten up leads.

To me, what I prefer to get a Thrash tone is definitely a High gain amp with a boost in front to tighten it up vs. a Distortion pedal. That's coming from experience of me having to use a Distortion pedal due to the lacking in the tonal department of the amp I used to have.

That being said, When I used a Distortion pedal, to me the Boss ST-2 Power Stack was as close to a good Thrash tone that didn't sound like a can of bees as I could get, compared to other pedals I tried. I still have it too, in case if I need a back up for tone, but I have a Mesa now that takes care of my tone for me, so I really don't have much use for it anymore.

So in conclusion, High gain amp + Overdrive pedal = Gold.

Be sparing on the pre-amp gain though, and let the overdrive pedal do the rest.

If you're on a budget for an amp head, look into used Peavey 3120/XXX's (Same amp, different look and power tubes) you won't need high output pickups or OD pedals unless you want to. If you're REALLY on a budget, look into a used Bugera 333XL.

If you want to continue using pedals and want something different, buy a used Metal Zone and have it modded by Keeley or whoever (I think the old lady next door runs a pedal modding business; thanks internet!)

Guitar Center's used section is a great place for deals on used amps/pedals.
