GFS Dream 90?

Anyone Tried these? I was thinking of getting a set to put into my Dot. They're alot cheaper than Phat cats, But do they sound good? Do they really sound like P90s? or are they just cheap cheesy knockoffs? and would I be better off to spend the extra money and Get the Duncans?

Re: GFS Dream 90?

I have one in the neck of my Flying V and I like it. I've never had real experience with actual P-90's so I can't comment as to how it compares. It strikes me as a very clear sounding humbucker. Not a lot of bass, not hugely bright. Clear and warm are two words I would use to describe it. Very articulate. I've heard that the Phat Cats don't sound much like real P-90's but, but that's just hearsay as I haven't used the Phat Cats either.

Re: GFS Dream 90?

I put a Dream 90 in a friends Epi LP purely for aesthetics (The Black pearloid matched his pickgaurd) I was surprised that it did have some usable tone to it. I never tried a Fat cat, But compaired to a Duncan P-90 the dream 90 is some what flat or lackluster IMO.

I have em in a Squier Strat. Love em. Somewhere between a single coil, a P90 and a HB. Not exactly like any of them, but the best of all worlds. Think of it as a bright humbucker or a fat single coil

I've never had any experience w/ p90s either, but I have the dream 90 in the neck of tradition LP knockoff and I totally dig the tone. It's like the dude said above. It's like a combo of a bright bucker and a fat single. Totally sweet for the price!

Re: GFS Dream 90?

GFS pickups in general:

Veils "clear and warm" description pretty much apes my own experience with not only the Dream 90, but several other GFS pups I've tried. While I have not tried all their offerings, the Dream 90, Dream 180, Retrotron Brooklyns and Hot TC Alnico have left me with that very impression.

For the right player and/or in the right gutiar, these pickups can be outstanding. For the wrong player and/or in the wrong guitar, they can be not so outstanding. I think thats why you see the love/hate reviews .....not much middle ground......although the love reviews significantly outnumber the hate reviews.

My experiecne with GFS lies somewhere in the middle. I don't like saying "for the money" as I believe pickups should stand on their own merits regardless of price. I've used some cheap pickups that worked much better than expensive ones, so it's all about finding what works for you. It may take some time, money and experementation, but thats where the fun ( for me anyway ) is!

So, back to the Dream 90. They don't sound like a P-90 to my ears, but more so like a big toned strat pickup. Not a bad thing mind you, but not true P-90 tone. I find them to be very open and articulate with pronounced treble and mids and not a lot of bass response. That said, I do like them and think they have a nice voice. Once again......for the right player and guitar, they are gold.

I use a Dream 180 in my old 50's Supro archtop and a set of Retrotrons in a custom built semi-hollow. After trying various pickup brands in those guitars, the GFS's were the best fit.

So....kudos to GFS for bringing some different, varied and cool designs to the table. They seem to be responsive to players requests. I dig the fact they have forged their own niche and style with the retrotron series and continue to add things like lipsticks to the mix.

Re: GFS Dream 90?

I'd have to echo teleblooz' description of the Dream 90. Very sweet sound, but not a P90. I've got a set in an Epi SG and they sound great. The guitar has its own sound now, not a P90 sound, not a humbucker sound, unique unto itself :D

Re: GFS Dream 90?

i agree with teleblooz as far as the dream 90s go -- i have them in a pawnshop aria pro II (from the matsumoku factory) (which by the way is a very lovely guitar but the neck is a tad fat for my hands) and they have a fat but clear and articulate sound. i also don't like saying that something is good "for the price" -- tone is tone, and tone is the quest.

The reason it's not a P90 is cause it's a single-coil in a humbucker sized housing, wound to emulate a P90.

Close, but no cigar :duck:

I had one and compared to the Fralin P-90s (a P-90 size bobbin wound exactly like Fralin's P-90s & stuffed into a humbucker sized housing) it sounds dark & lifeless...

My favorite P-90s in a HB housing:

1 - Fralin P-90s (a little more narrow/compressed but nails the P-90 vibe - Special order only)

2 - Rio Grande Bastard (Not the Fat Bastard, which is a muddy mess)

3 - Kent Armstrong Vintage P-90 HB (Nice grainy edge, more of a modern P-90ish tone)

4 - Phat Cats (Works great in hollow bodies, not so great in solid mahogany)

Hope that helps! :bigthumb:
