I'm getting ready to resurrect my vintage Telecaster - it currently has a dead SD hot rail bridge and SD quarter pounder neck. It also has a five way switch to split the hot rail for two different combinations with the neck pickup. I’m going to redo all the guts and pickups. Currently I play a BIG variety of music - mostly classic rock, but also country, blues, and metal. I’m currently in a three piece band and switched from my vintage Stratocaster to a Gibson SG, just because of it’s fatter tone and it “fits” the band better. I want to bring the Tele back out because it plays GREAT! Also back in the 80's and 90's when I played "hair" music I would freak other guitarists out with my blonde Tele - they'd have their Kramers, Jacksons, Ibanez Jems, etc. and laugh at my "country guitar" until they heard it. With the SD Hot Rail, the Tele was my metal tone guitar - extremely heavy tone.
So, for my Tele I’m looking at the GPS Lil Puncher XLs (new design with longer rails so both “E” strings don’t get cheated). I'm hoping there are some people out here who use the Lil Punchers, but was wondering if you use the Modern Vintage or Modern Lead versions (or the Cool Vintage)? I've read some people think these pickups are a bit dark - again which version? I’m planning on tapping the bridge pickup using the five switch as I did previously and may get a push/pull tone pot to tap the neck (mostly likely not, because I want a humbucker tone for the neck – I have NEVER been happy with my Tele neck pickup tone by itself).
Okay, I know I’m being a bit windy, but does anybody have any experience with these pickups? I’m looking for all suggestions or opinions. Thanks!!
PS – Any opinions on the five way switches at Guitar Fetish – are they any good or not?
PSS - This is my first weekend off since November and I can't make up my mind if I'm glad or not.
