GFS P90?

I know the Mean90 is supposed to be solid, does anyone have any experience with the actual P90? Are Duncans worth the $30-40 more?

Re: GFS P90?

I like the neck model of the Mean90, I have a couple. If you get Phat Cats, mag swaps are almost mandatory.

Re: GFS P90?

So the bridge model of the Mean 90 is not so good?

There's been favorable comments here on them too, but more for the neck model. Remember, it's easy to swap mags, and since P-90's have two, you can put in any two you want. I think P-90's with twin A5's are great in the neck, but too bright and thin in the bridge for me, so I put in these pairs: A8/A5, A8/A4, RC A4/RC A4, and UOA5/UOA5 to tame the treble and add mids. I insist on bridge PU's with some body and fullness to them, and can't handle shrill, piercing tones.

Re: GFS P90?

I think the mean 90 is good but I have to agree with Rick, the bridge can be a little thin. I think the A2/A8 is a good combo for the Mean 90. I think the neck sounds very similar to a P90. Probably more-so than Gibson or Duncans offerings.

Re: GFS P90?

i put a set of gfs p90s in my 1966 epiphone casino. Some dude had put humbuckers in it at some stage (prolly the 80s), then someone else put some vintage vibe handwound humn sized p90s in it. I put chrome dog ear covers back on to cover the hum holes and mounted a piar of p90s like it should have had all along. Sounded killer. way better than the vintage vibes (they were too strat like) and a night and day differencre when played next to a p90 equipped modern epipohone. So id say yeah - gfs p90s are really good - and they have correct string spacing too unlike gibson p90s - as well as being calibrated.
Dunno about the mean/dream 90s etc but the proper p90s are great. Im sure the duncans are cool tho too....the duncan 59s are a much better pickup imo than the gfs 57s....so im guessing there may be a difference in the p90s as well. I do like the gfs over the gibson p90s tho....they seem to have have a wider frequency response.

Re: GFS P90?

Wow, I think that just sold me on them. Are they A5? The mighty mites get good reviews, but I think that's because they're so cheap, and those are ceramics. I want something legit and the Mean90 reviews are so good that I thought the GFS might be worth a shot.

Re: GFS P90?

I'm pretty sure the Mean model has the same bobbin specs/wind as their vintage models. I think the main difference in tone would be the baseplate which is nickel/silver instead of brass like the vintage ones. I don't know how much difference it makes but people seem to really love those things.

Is you around??????? (See above post about Mean 90 Bridge Magnet swaps)_Por Favor!....

Re: GFS P90?

GFS Mean 90's are DEFINITELY worth a shot. They are really great pups and especially for the price. Like has been said, I also like the neck Mean 90 (in either the neck or the bridge positions) better than the bridge model. Plus VERY easy to mod with mag swaps to tailor the tone to exactly what you want. One of the most versatile and best sounding pups you can get, imho.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on P-90 magnet swaps? Thanks!

how does the bridge Mean 90 do in the neck position ? is the bridge version essentially the same as the neck position only hotter ? if so would this account for the thinness in the bridge position ?

Not that I know of, but it's very easy. Except for Phat Cats, P-90's have two screws holding the baseplate to the coils. Loosen the screws about 1/8" and push out the mags, one at a time. Pull a mag out halfway, and hold a new mag next to it. The ends should repel and the sides attract. Pull out the old mags, slide the new ones in, and tighten the 2 baseplate screws.

If you get mixed up, remember, the two mags in a P-90 lay side by side, repelling each other.

You have so many more tone options with P-90's, that HB's can only dream of. You can pair up any 2 mages in a P-90 and really sculpt your tone.

Re: GFS P90?

Sounds Good---So the Mean 90---is like a p 90 on the inside, despite looking like a humbucker on the out side ? So if I got a A8 Magnet to go with the A5 that is already in there...that should beef up the tone for the Bridge Mean 90---correct??

Also ---I should look for a humbucker sized A8 --- to fit in the case---NOT A p90 SIZE ---IS THAT CORRECT??? I thought I would just try to order everything I need at the same time.

Also thanks for your assistance!!!!
