GFS P90?

Re: GFS P90?

Sounds Good---So the Mean 90---is like a p 90 on the inside, despite looking like a humbucker on the out side ? So if I got a A8 Magnet to go with the A5 that is already in there...that should beef up the tone for the Bridge Mean 90---correct??

Also ---I should look for a humbucker sized A8 --- to fit in the case---NOT A p90 SIZE ---IS THAT CORRECT??? I thought I would just try to order everything I need at the same time.

Also thanks for your assistance!!!!

HB's and P-90's use the same mags, which makes life simple. There's a number of HB-sized P-90's out these days, for guys that want to retrofit them to HB guitars. Especially nice if you have an LP or SG.

Another thing to consider: I have a few guitars with a P-90 neck (like a Phat Cat or Mean 90) and a HB bridge. Nice combination.

An A8/A5 mag pair in a bridge P-90 is excellent, as is the slightly warmer A8/A4. Gives it more body. Twin A5's in the neck slot (which most P-90 have standard) are ideal.

Re: GFS P90?

I have the regular GFS P90 set in my ES-135 and they are very nice. Nice warm but snappy in the neck and thick and nasty in the bridge. I just ordered a second set for my Flying V.

Re: GFS P90?

i put a set of gfs p90s in my 1966 epiphone casino. Some dude had put humbuckers in it at some stage (prolly the 80s), then someone else put some vintage vibe handwound humn sized p90s in it. I put chrome dog ear covers back on to cover the hum holes and mounted a piar of p90s like it should have had all along. Sounded killer. way better than the vintage vibes (they were too strat like) and a night and day differencre when played next to a p90 equipped modern epipohone. So id say yeah - gfs p90s are really good - and they have correct string spacing too unlike gibson p90s - as well as being calibrated.
Dunno about the mean/dream 90s etc but the proper p90s are great. Im sure the duncans are cool tho too....the duncan 59s are a much better pickup imo than the gfs 57s....so im guessing there may be a difference in the p90s as well. I do like the gfs over the gibson p90s tho....they seem to have have a wider frequency response.

(Reviving this thread since I'm considering Dog Ear P90s)

I'm considering a dog ear P90 swap on a casino like guitar because the current pickups are too hot. My go to would be the SD antiquities but I'm going on the cheap for this one so GFS was my first thought. Do you think the neck pickup (with some of the tone rolled off) can get a good jazz tone on your casino a la grant green?

Re: GFS P90?

I've had pretty good luck with GFS pickups, and while I haven't tried any of their standard P-90s, I recently put a set of their HB-sized Dream 90s in a build and like them a lot.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: GFS P90?

I have a GFS neck P90. Sounded awful and I replaced it with a SD Mini Humbucker.

Just as a side note, the pickup has the braided wire, it is only for show. There its not connected to anything.

GFS P90?

Which one? I have the Mean 90 and it's pretty nice. I've never tried the Dream 90s, but I hear mixed reviews about them.

I’m not sure what he had going on with the braided wire, but I can tell you a little about a Dream 90.

Everything I’ve heard about the Mean 90 is that it’s a great, very true-to-a-P90 sound. With that in mind, I have an Epiphone with THEIR P90s that I consider to also be a very good representation of the great P90. If I compare THAT to the guitar I have with Dream 90s, I would say that the dream 90s have much more of a single-coilish sound than the P90s (which start edging in on sounding like a humbucker). Think of the definition present in a great single coil sound, add some low-end that isn’t typically present in single coils, and then bring the output up to that of a mid-output humbucker.… THAT’S a Dream 90.
