GHS David Gilmour Strings

David Gilmour has been using GHS strings for a while now and there are two versions of his signature string now available, one specifically for his Fender Strat guitars, and one for his Les Pauls!

Extremely playable with a fat bottom end and very usable high strings which work really well with the scale length of a Strat.

E: 0.10
B: 0.12
G: 0.16
D: 0.28
A: 0.38
E: 0.48

Anyone here used them? Opinions?

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

Not sure I'd like that personally, part of the magic of a strat to me is the way the low strings speak. I prefer a bigger bottom end, and usually use 10-52s on my strat.

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I tried them and liked them but they're too expensive.

I can get Ernie Ball RPS Slinky's for less money and they last much longer.

The idea behind the 2 guages is to have the same tension on both types of guitar and that does make sense. :1:

I actually prefer a bigger bottom end myself, but since my usual strings are D'addario XLs that come in .10-.46, these are actually bigger than I'm used to.

The weird thing is that the B and G string are actually thinner than the D'adds but the bottom three strings are thicker. I don't think it'll be too noticable, though.

Well, I found them on Ebay for around the same price as other brands and actually cheaper than buying my usual in a store. So, the price isn't a big deal to me. :)

I ordered a pack anyway, so I'll update this thread with some opinions once I've given them a good going at.

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I got some sets for dirty cheap because NOBODY wants'em here in my neck of woods.

I've found the gauges being very balanced, specially the strat set.

They're ok, I guess... but they're NOT D'Addarios...

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

i love the "red" set. thats the LP one. feels like home on my V. 10.5-50, they are. bridge the gap between 10-52 and 11-50, in just the way i like.

probably gonna pick up a set of the blue if i buy a certain strat tomorrow...

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I'm a GHS User, so the strings themselves were in my comfort zone, but as a guy who plays 9s, they were too heavy for me.

David's got stronger hands than I do :)

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

That's close to my setup i use right now.
I use GHS boomers 10-12-16-26-36-46 and love it.:cool2:

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I have them in my strat and I wouldn't change them for anything. They last a long time too.

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I used to use them all the time. I like the 12 and 16's but the tension felt off going to the 10. Probably my imagination.

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

You guys got me curious to try some, so I got a good deal on 3 sets on Evil Bay.

Will try them this weekend. :scratchch

Re: GHS David Gilmour Strings

I totally forgot to update this thread.

Well, I got them ages ago but I only got around to putting them on my Pacifica about two and a half weeks ago.

I'm actually really liking them. I usually use D'addario .10s on this guitar. These GHS strings have thinner B and G strings but the low three are thicker. Despite that, they feel a lot different. They're a lot more loose and flexible feeling, definitely not as stiff (go on, make a penis joke, that's not predictable at all) as the D'addarios. They still feel like 10s, but bending and vibrato got a lot easier. It's kinda the perfect compromise for me, as they still sound thick and they have enough resistance for my heavy picking hand to not feel like it's playing with elastic bands but they're easier on my fretting hand.

Sound-wise, they're definitely warmer and lot more mellow than the D'adds. They're missing that zing and snappy top end, but I haven't noticed any drop in clarity and harmonics pop off them just as easily. It may not be a sound for everyone but it's one that I prefer for this guitar.

I'm not really sure if I'm qualified to pass judgement on how long they last. Like I said, I've had them on the guitar for about two and a half weeks and they still sound pretty great. This isn't my main guitar at the moment, but it still gets between 20 minutes to an hour of play every day. I've never been particularly hard on strings though, so your milage may vary. Mine still sound and feel relatively new. I haven't run into any tuning problems with them, either.

So, yeah, I like'em enough to use again on this guitar and I'm going to try a red set on my Westone whenever I next restring it. If you haven't tried them before then they're worth a pop.
