Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

A friend a mine that moved to another province has 2 Larrivés. I remember them sounding fantastic, but never playing one.

The only issue with Larrivé, is that here, I can't get them at my local shop that takes really good care of people. Only at the Canada equivalent of Guitar Center, which SUCKS in this town even harder than everywhere else.

Just for that, it's a lot less appealing to get one, even though they are a LOT less expensive than Gibson or Taylor for the same features.

:(

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

Update : Been playing A LOT of acoustics.

Found out that I don't really bond with Martin guitars. I think it's the feel of the necks and how it ties in with the body. There's something there that I just don't vibe with.

Larrivée guitars are interesting indeed. You get a lot for the buck, and the feel is exceptional, but I have found that their dreadnought models do not project as much as what I would like, specially in the low end.

Gibsons are vastly different from model to model. Still dig that songwritter and the J-45.

BUT, the big surprise that really blew me away : ****ing Taylor guitars man. WOW. Even their 200 series will swing with the best of them. Not the most ornate looking instruments, but you get one with a good rosewood back and sides, and you have yourself a winner.

I'm getting closer to finding what I'm looking for. Really thinking that I'd dig either a Gibson or Taylor. We'll wait for the cash to keep coming in, but the summer will be interesting.

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

i love the way my taylor plays but its a delicate guitar. when i play really hard it doesnt give me everything i put into it. when i play softer its beautiful but im a ham fisted basher at heart

Hey man, great to hear that you found something that you're developing an affinity for.

Have you had a chance to play a Guild at all?

See, I'm a finger picker, classical style with the nails and everything. When I strum, it's all about control and being delicate. Maybe that's why I'm connecting with them....

Yeah man, but they sorta left me feeling indifferent.

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

I got a songwriter about 18 months ago. Nice sound, nice feel but the action had to be dropped a lot. I like the thicker top which is a concern in this higher dry elevation.

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

The only acoustic Gibson I ever played sure sounded awesome, but it was worth 5000 bucks.

BUT if your only criterion in "good", I have a suggestion. Take a look at high-end Breedlove or Guild guitars, these rock the hell out of their wood. Gibsons and Taylors sure are not bad, but they are expensive as ****. Can't tell about Martin guitars though

Re: Gibson acoustics : Opinions?

I love Gibson acoustics! :)
I've owned a J200 True Vintage for 3 years: man, it is the most expensive guitar I've ever bought for sure, but it has a great tone, and then, I've always loved the way that guitar looks. You're buying an icon, really.
I also like J45s very much, great guitars, both the standard and the tv version.
The only modification I've done to my J200 is swapping the bone bridge saddle for a fossilized walrus ivory one (more output and way more clarity and definition) and install a L.R. Baggs Element system. Oh, 013 strings too.
Check it out!
