Gibson acoustics?

Am i the only person in this world that doesnt really understand why everyone loves gibson acoustics? i mean, seriously, millions of people dream of them, thousands own them, most of the famous guitarists own one. and yet, everytime i get up and try one out, it just sounds like nothing's coming out of that little hole, sounds muted, blank, and overly sturdy. i know sturdy is good, but this thing feels unbreakable, which feels weird, and sounds weird.

iunno, tell me what you think.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

Some of them just have a "sound" I dig me some J-45! Acosutics have so much more personality than electrics, and they aren't nearly as able to manipulated as an electric. Tone/Vols on the guitar, Pre-post gains, EQ's, etc....All through pickups that can ifluence the tone in massive ways. A greta Acoustic is a bedrock of sound that needs tweeked - not mangled.

Go and have someone play a Martin D-28, A high end Taylor, A killer Takamine, And a J-45, and a Gibson Hummingbird while you are blind folded. You'll hear a world of differences, and they will all be good!

Re: Gibson acoustics?

I rather enjoy Gibson acoustics. Simply put - they get closer to the acoustic tone in my head than Martins and Taylors do. I perfectly understand why some people love them, and I perfectly understand why some people don't.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

Gibson Acoustics = EMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Give me a Martin, Taylor, Garrison or Guild!!

Re: Gibson acoustics?

why do you call them emo?

Dashboard Confessional. They're what made me see Gibson acoustics as emo, I just can't help but to make that association. I think Stranger Than Fiction also played a part.

Either way, Martin and Taylor both make better acoustics.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

im sorry but, richard ashcroft plays a gibson acoustic, that automatically makes them amazing.

wait a sec, dont take that as if im supporting gibsons, i still think they dont sound like much of anything.

Wow, that's about the shallowest thing I've heard all day. A couple bands with guys who are probably less than 30 years old play a guitar that's been made since before their parents were born, and that's who you associate them with?

My dad's got a really old SJ, and it's one of the best sounding acoustic guitars I've ever heard. It's crazy loud, and sounds great.

You people need to learn to take jokes. Oh wait, I forgot, I'm on the internet! :smack:

Re: Gibson acoustics?

When I go to music stores, I rarely even look at electrics. I like checking out all the highend acoustics. My favorites are Martin and Taylor, but the occasional Gibson can be magic if it's setup right and turns out to be a good one. Gibsons have a drier and more blunt tone, but that's part of their sound, and you can hear it on a lot of great recordings.

Just last week, I discovered a "Gibson acoustic room" at one of the best LA stores, Truetone Music. I walked in and realized it was all of Gibson's very best acoustics, and all had been inspected by the best guitar tech in town and tweaked if necessary.
It was a real opportunity to 'get to know' Gibson acoustics, because it's so hard to do it in places like GC. I was totally blown away by their acoustics for the first time.....but the prices were through the roof!!!

Re: Gibson acoustics?

OH man. You really havent played any nice Gibson Jumbo acoustics I can tell that!

Re: Gibson acoustics?

I was pleasently suprised by Gibson acoustics. When I set out to buy an acoustic Gibson wasn't on my list until I played a few and they just had the sound I wanted.

Short of spending a lot of money on a Bourgeois or Collings, Gibson had the best sounding guitars out of the lot of manufacturers I played. I can understand why someone might go with another manufacturer as most of the Gibson's I played had more low to mid end tones than they did high end. Someone like Taylor tends to make more articulate guitars with nice highs.

A friend just received a custom ordered J-45 with rosewood back and sides and a adirondack spruce top and it could quite possibly be one of the top few acoustics that I've ever played. It plays great and has some of best high end definition that I've ever heard.

Not liking them because it's not the tone you're looking for would be one thing but to essentially say they're toneless is another. I haven't experienced that with a single Gibson acoustic that I've played at any price.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

i understand what your saying, and i would usually never make such a rash statement about a certain guitar, but of the 5 or 6 ive played at guitar center, thats exactly how it felt to me. just sounded muffled and terrible. I really want to try a good one, since a lot of my favorite guitarists use them, but i have yet to find one that comes close to the level of craftsmanship / playability of my 800 dollar guild.

im still really open minded about this because i WANT to hear a good one, but gc just doesnt seem to want me to. i'll see if samash has any good ones.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

Well, I own a J200-12string. I'm yet to meet anyone who doesn't think it's the best sounding 12-string they've heard. The action is 'amazing' and I'm not one to use that in the trendy sense. Its 6 string sister is high on my 'to buy' list. I've played 6 string J200's and I can't say I've heard a better sound one-on-one.

If you're considering buying this kind of guitar, and there's one in your local store, I would really advise you requesting a new set of strings and set-up before passing judgement. I mean if you're going to spend this kind of money its worth it. If the store want the sale then they'll do it for free. Even so, I'd sport them the cost of the strings.

I go to a special place when ever I play mine!

Well, I got mine at GC, but that was way back when, and I did save it from a fate worse than death! The left to right conversion.

Truetone though, are a store and a half.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

I'm no expert with acoustics, but a few weeks ago I played a Gibson Songwriter acoustic and in my humble opinion I thought thought it was outstanding. The tone was extreamly balanced, workmanship was flawless and even with .012's on it, it played just as easy as my LP Standard. Yeah, it was a bit pricey but if I had $2,000.00 laying around I probably would have bought it right there.

Can't comment on Gibsons other acoustics, but that Songwriter was great.

Re: Gibson acoustics?

haha, yeah im not in the market, i just bought a new 6string acoustic, but yeah... there are so many other guitars out there for lower price that sound just amazing.
