Gibson BFG with tremolo?

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

I like the BFG in general, especially the brown-toned one that doesn't have so much contrast in the top. I like the utilitarian approach to doing things on it -- see-through covers on the back, no truss rod cover, no inlays, P90 where you need it, humbucker where you need it, the control layout…

Maybe with a graphite nut, locking tuners, some WD-40 and ball bearings, I'd try a trem on one.

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

Isn't that a tad overkill, though? I mean, my LP has the standard setup (with grover tuners though), and you relly have to work your ass off if you wanna detune it.

I don't know. My Les Paul Custom has the stock Grovers from 1986. The posts don't seem that solid anymore, maybe they've worn out, I'm contemplating putting a set of locking tuners on it to fix the problem and have the nut slots checked out by a tech.

Comparing it to my new PRS stoptail with locking tuners, the PRS rarely goes out of tune. It also has a compensated nut so intonation is alot better than the Gibson

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

I love the trem in a Les Paul idea and the hum/P90 combination - but the finish is just too ugly. I mean really... come one... don't the designers at Gibson have eyes???

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

I have one of these BFG Tremolos and I really like it; it has Grover Locking Tuners, and I prefer the Schaller Trem over the Floyd Rose. I had a Floyd Rose once, and as all users know-once a string breaks you cannot play the guitar anymore. I do not need that in my playing. Breaking strings should be no bif deal as there are still 5 other strings to riff on, but with the Floyd the rest of them are completely oput of tune-so at a gig a player has to stand there and look like a fool.
As far as the tuning issues with this BFG Trem; they are minor/miniscule to say the least. We are big boys now; and if a REAL guitar player finds - fine tuning - there instruments between songs at a gig or rehersal, then those complainers are LAZY. i wouldn't want you in my band !
But to remedy this solution, ( as I said, the tuing issue is miniscule and slight ), I have a clamp on tuner, and use it. It takes SECONDS to do.
And the Guitar ? LOVE IT ! What a STUNNER ! This wild BFG Finish is a Les Paul IN THE RAW ! It has like aligator skin, and looks like a beast, I always liked the natural feel of the wood of my guitars, and this is perfect !
That Kill Switch comes in handy too, I love using it in between songs, or for a stacatto effect.
So - look what you get for $1,200.00 ! AND the reson it is only $1,200.00 is that it is a Barely Finished Guitar; it didn't require hours and hours of laquer applications and buffing.
THE GIBSON LES PAUL BFG TREMOLO : ONE AWESOME GUITAR FOR REAL AWESOME GUITARISTS !

thanks !! :angryfire

Gibson was actually supersmart in using that trem. why? because the studs and entire route are so that you can swap it for an OFR or a gotoh floyd without extra routing!!

and a compliment to Gibson's address from me, says a great deal.

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

If you've got one and you dig it, that's great. I want to like this - design-wise, it's right up my alley - but every BFG I've played has been awful. Almost all of my guitars have Wilkinson trems with locking tuners, so I'm very used to that setup, and I really dig the idea of a P90 in the neck. It's just that the quality on the BFGs I've held in my hands has been terrible - and I love me some Gibsons.

None of my Carvins have cost me more than $1450. If I found a good one on clearance or used, I might grab one to see what I can do with it, but until then the competition is just too strong at that price point.

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

Well, the wooden knobs are kinda lame on these, otherwise the only plus I see about this particular model is the shallow neck angle, because of the trem; anyway, not as moronic as having a Kahler and no locking nut. Someone flunked Physics 101 at school... Yes, the non-locking trem is compatible with a Floyd, but do you really want a Floyd on that thing without a locking nut?

The P90/hb combo is a good one, they should do more - V, SG, and maybe some semis.

Re: Gibson BFG with tremolo?

I have an early 80's Hamer vector with a trem and locking tuners. The neck angle on it doesnt really effect tuning stability THAT much. Granted Hamer string pull is straighter than Gibson but a properly cut and lubed nut will do wonders.
