Gibson BFG

I might be aquiring a Les Paul BFG via a trade. What is everyone's opinion on the burstbucker pro? I love the idea of the p-90 in the neck but the burstbuckers I've heard in the past didn't do alot for me.

Re: Gibson BFG

The BFG has a BB3 not pro
They're good pups, I think they read like 9k, non wax potted Alnico 2
I would probably replace it though if I had one, put something a little more spicy in there.
The thing about that guitar is that the middle position (both pups) sounds unlike anything you will ever hear.

Re: Gibson BFG

the bb3(that's what they come with stock anyways) is probably a bit raw, raunchy, with a bit of quack from the lack of potting. all very good for classic rock sounds

+1. The BFG is a great idea. I've done the HB bridge/Phat Cat neck to a couple of my guitars, and it works very well. All you'd probably need to do is swap the magnet in the BB3 (it has an A2). A2's have very rounded high ends, strong mids, a loose low end, and low output. Some guys love them, others don't.

An A3 will give a brighter "chimey" sound with similar output. An A4 will give more treble & output, but still retain some mids. An A5 will give a lot of treble and significantly more output, with scooped mids. An A8 gives strong output and mids, with just enough treble for bite. One of these will probably give you what you want, and at a fraction of the price.

I have a similar setup LP with a JB Bridge and P-90 neck. Middle position is sweet.

Re: Gibson BFG

Like these guys are saying a BFG should have a BB3 not a PRO...if it has a Pro it's not original and FWIW, I don't care for the PRO's much at all but the BB3 is a cool pickup, fat and nasty with a nice edgy tone. In truth If I had a BFG I, more than likely wouldn't change either pickup! They look terrible (IMO) but the 2 or 3 that I have played sound quite nice.

they came out with a studio version too iirc; same pickups and controls with standard(unflamed) top and plain finish without the dopey flame-shaped carve.

Re: Gibson BFG

Well it looks like I won't be getting it after all. The guy had had no bites in three weeks of adverting it, so we were talking and had agree to a trade, then I guess this morning someone got ahold of him in regards to the guitar and the price magically went up drastically so I told him nope. I'll get a nice epi or a studio to goof around with. Thanks for the advice though on the Burstbucker.

I love the Idea of a P90 in the bridge as well ;)

Re: Gibson BFG

I like the look of the BFG,

It just looks, raw, manly, rough and kick ass no frills, just the essentials, I build it myself kinda look,

For me, It says....

I dont need no 10 Top figured maple cap !!!, bindings !!, boutique pickups !!, shiny nitro finish !!! or any fancy girly stuff !!!!!,

I just need !!!

A Bfg, plug in a Marshall tube Amp, my skills and my attitude !!!!!, arghhh !!!!!

But seriously :D, given a choice, I would throw the BFG in The trash, and get a Les Paul Supreme or a Custom instead :32: ,......... a total turnaround :D

hehehehehehehehe,

The BFG I played, that a friend lend me is acoustically loud, maybe becs of the chambers, and its lighter,

The tone plug in, is good, but IMHO opinion not a meaty as a solid wood Les paul, maybe due to the chambers, The tone of the pickups is fine for me,

I think all les paul produce today are either chambered or has weight relief holes,

but I think you could order a Les paul from their Custom shop that is solid wood with no chambers or weight relief holes in it, :D

I suggest, get a BFG, its a lot cheaper, its different, the pickups sounds good to me and

I think after 20 years or so, It would be a collectors Item,
