Gibson BFG

Re: Gibson BFG

Looks Awesome! I've never played one, but from what I've read about them when I researched them after I first saw them, they sometimes need a lot of work when it comes to frets.

Re: Gibson BFG

They are rad.

Came really close to buying an orange burst one a while ago... but they came out with a green one so I will be forced to acquire that finish instead.

Re: Gibson BFG

That's a Les Paul I could get along with!

Absolutely! I had a natural. It was awesome. Super versatile, looked killer. My problem was that it was 10 or 11 lbs and I'm a wimp (24 year old with back problems). Do it! Those are badass guitars with great necks.

Re: Gibson BFG

I love those. To me, they are all business. I've always perceived them as guitars for players who are there to play and be rad, not to worry about what the crowd is gonna think about the guitar choice. They are rock machines, through and through.

Re: Gibson BFG

Owned one in Ink blue.

Total garbage. The P90 and Burstbucker 3 just didn't match well. You had to use one or the other and the lack of height adjustment for the pickups didn't help the guitar.

The killswitch was super stiff and oversized. Would've been better with a tap switch like Buckethead's. The pickup selecter (located where the Tone 2 control would be) was completely unreachable and therefore unusable. I sold it a month after I got it. Steer clear and save your money for a Studio.

Re: Gibson BFG

I've loved the ones I've played, but just hate the '50s neck. Come on, where's the slim '60s neck BFG?! I think they look pretty awesome.

The girls must have bought them. Geez, you guys griping about thick necks and heavy guitars. Is there a testosterone shortage around here? Man up!

Re: Gibson BFG

The Gibson '50's neck is nowhere near thick. It's what most companies would call a standard C profile.

Re: Gibson BFG

I got the gary Moore model, 2011 or 2010. Very light (chambered), so that it's neck heavy. I'm changing out the Grover tuners to make it better balanced. It hangs like a Strat when standing. If that doesn't work I'll try adding a bigsby. I looove the neck profile. Thicker than my 88 custom, thinner than my 57 junior historic ri. Love the p90, hate the BB3. They actually sound nice together. Hate the electronics layout, I'll probably rewire it standard. Adding a p'up ring to make swapping more practical.

Re: Gibson BFG

Bought a black BFG new in '08 and loved it. I used to own a '77 Custom so I couldn't wrap my brain around the pickup switch being down below and the killswitch on the upper bout (kept turning the effin thing off!) so I switched them - waaay better. The carved top was interesting; it was like the CNC router did it's thing and they didn't bother to sand it out so it was kinda "rippled" like snake skin. The P90 and BB were an interesting mix, but I had to install a bleeder on the volume pot for a little more versatility. The chambered body was about 2/3 the weight of my old Custom, and was very comfy. I traded it and a Fender vibrolux for a '73 Ricky 4000 bass for my cousin, who in turn gave me 1500 in cash (dude with the bass wanted to trade for an LP and decent amp)
I miss that guitar.... There is nothing like an 'all business' Les Paul , and from what I hear the older ones are better quality than the newer ones. I'd be tempted to buy the BFG at that price, but my next axe is going to be a PVX kit - or a precision'59 kit, I haven't decided which .....

I must have played some unusual BFGs then because the three different ones I've tried over the years have all been round like a baseball bat. Or maybe I just have a different definition of neck shapes. To me, Fender strats are a standard C profile. These BFGs might have well been a 2x4 in comparison. I have wondered if the Gary Moore sig had a different neck shape than the standard BFGs. I have yet to try one though.

Re: Gibson BFG

Had one when they came out. Loved the bb3, loved the p90, but not in the same instrument..PITA to get eq right. Mine def did mot have a typical 50s neck. It was more like a flatter back 60s neck, which is the absolute worst thing in the world for me. Natural tone was great, controls/location sucked. Neck set off my CTS so bad I was nearly in tears playing it. Took it back after a week.
