Gibson Burstbucker question

So I recently came under the ownership of a pair of Gibson burstbucker pups. One is labled #1 and the other #2 on the back. Do these number assignments denote position, or bursbucker type?

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

Type, there's BB 1, 2, & 3 ranked by resistance. They're typically paired as 1 & 2 (neck & bridge) or 2 & 3 (neck & bridge). I don't know of Gibson does it on any guitars, but 1 & 3 is also a viable pairing.

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

Those are Burst Bucker Pro models since they've got Alnico V magnets. Also known as BB5.

Much appreciated. For some reason, I couldn't find a straight answer anywhere. This place always comes through for me.

Except they say AL5, so BB5. And your sig should be changed from conceded to conceited. ;)

It's spelled that way because some member a few years ago was debating something pointless with me and spelled it that way. I thought it was pretty funny that he botched his insult.

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

Dispense with the guesswork and measure their resistances with a multimeter. Use the higher one in the bridge and the lower one in the neck.

There's no such thing as a "Burstbucker 5".

There are the Burstbucker Type 1, 2 and 3, which are unpotted with A2 mags
And the Burstbucker Pro Neck and Bridge, which are potted with A5 mags. The stickers on the back still say #1 and #2, rather than spell out 'neck' and 'bridge'.

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

They've also been known as BB5 and say AL 5 on them. They've been around since the early 2000s.

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

Known around here, and also by what Gibson employees told me in 2004 when I had a question about them in the LP Studio I owned. And, sure, catalogs are never wrong...

Re: Gibson Burstbucker question

Sorry Beau, when they first came out they were originally known as Burstbucker V. Gibson changed the name to Pros after a short while. Truth.

Rhetorical question: So if someone asks to ID a Distortion Neck, should we insist it's a Seymourizer?
