Gibson Dirty Fingers: a closer look

Re: Gibson Dirty Fingers: a closer look

What, you haven't swapped the magnets yet? Getting slow, old man ;).

Anyway, I like these kind of threads as well, so thanks!

With those stock mags, it's bound to be a bruiser. The stock pups that came in many a mid 80s Ibanez had similar architecture - triple ceramic, though wound to 12k. Fun for hard rock/metal but somewhat useless for anything else - quite hard sounding, likes to break up the output. Sound pretty ballsy when split too.

Not my cup of tea, not stock, not modded.

But if somebody would like to own a rare piece of p'up history, if the right offer is made, I could easily think about letting it go... hint! hint! ;)

Hehe, not interested either. One guitar with hot pups is enough for me. The problem with hot ones that they're already full throttle, you can't dial them back; with vintage/medium ones, you can add gain to get some extra stick.

Howdy,

Thanks for posting, Kojak. My '80 ES-335CRR (which I acquired in '95) came from Kalamazoo with Dirty Fingers. The plot thickens when I learned that every example I've seen on the internet has uncovered double creme bobbins, while mine came with Nickel covers! I wonder if they're Dirty Fingers at all..

Re: Gibson Dirty Fingers: a closer look

Dirty fingers never came with covers stock from Gibson. Super humbuckers, shaws, t tops, yeah, but not DF. Not sure about the velvet brick..do not think it came with covrs but not 100%

Re: Gibson Dirty Fingers: a closer look

I have a pickup that I believe is DF taken from an Epi guitar. I bought it on ebay and I use it in Epi Explorer. It sounds like crazy! Despite my Explorer is rather dark sounding itself, I have no problems playing artificial harmonics. They sometimes come out involuntarily!
Now I'm testing this guitar with DiMarzio X2N and Schaller Hot Stuff, they are not that crazy. Harmonics are OK, especially with X2N, but still my DF allows play them easier.
BTW. Did anyone try to look inside these new DF'? Are there three thick magnets as well?
I'm also thinking of making DF+ by swapping magnets to A2 by myself (I have already done magnet swap in few pickups). Do you think it's possible?
