Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

Niel Young plays the Firebird Minis in his old black 50's Les Paul with the Bigsby..I know its not the same as the Deluxe Mini , but in the same ballpark. Of course, he cranks it through Tweeds, so.
As far as the bridge- just put a Hot Duncan Minibucker in it.

No it is not...besides being humbucking and the same size a Mini and a Firebird pickup have nothing in common...the tone is completely different...

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

Hmm..spotted a couple interesting things about this new Deluxe.

1) Chambered-which I am fine with. If it sounds good, I don't care. But it's just not the real Vintage Deluxe feel if it does not weight 11-12 pounds (like my 78 did, lol).

3) mahogany 50s neck- again I'm cool with that. My "MF deluxe" had a 50s mahogany neck. But the originals had a pretty slim maple neck.

3) The big one that really matters- ALNICO II minis....Gibson has been doing Ceramic for the past 10+ years. This should make for a nice sounding mini, assuming they are using a similar wind, and output as the ceramics have been. I actually liked the ceramics they were using-very ballsy. Glad they did not go A5 here.

Make that 3 interesting things.

Makes you wonder then if this and the GC Exclusive P-90 LP share the same bodies, just different tuners and electronics. :scratchch Not looking to start any rumors but it does seem like a coincidence that this comes out right around the same time as the GC P-90 model doesn't it?

Either way, I'd like to try one of these out.

I'd say that's pretty much a given.

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

At an MSRP of 3300 street is gonna be around 2200 give or take so first I say point me to the 70's LP Deluxes for 2k and I'll buy a stack of 'em.

Second, deluxe LP's are not for everybody...mini buckers do not have the girth of full size buckers but FWIW, full size buckers do not have the stab and cut mini buckers have!

A quick look on eBay reveals many options in the $2200 range. Some more and some less.

Worth note...some Deluxes had large necks...and many had mahogany necks and quite a few were in teh sub 10 pound range but as time went on the necks got smaller and started being maple and the weight went up...WAY UP!

I played a 77 deluxe once that was just over 17 pounds!

On the pickups anybody know for sure what the originals had for magnets, I always assumed alnico 5...

I was never lucky enough to find one of those, my 78 was (in addition to being a POS) your stereotypical norlin deluxe- maple neck, pancaked, clownburst, etc. I traded an amp and some pedals I did not want at the time for it without having played it first, lol...stoopid me. Actually I think I ended up selling it for more than I would have ever got for the amp and pedals, so..maybe not so stoopid.

Based on the one I had, I'd definitely wager A5, and to my knowledge that was the defacto magnet for those 70s deluxe minis.

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

A friend of mine, in High School, had a '69 Deluxe Goldtop. Didn't care for it, so I doubt I'd care for a new one. I just don't care for mini humbuckers. The first thing I'd do, is pull out the pups, and install two soapbars. But, since there's a GC exclusive that already has P-90's, I wouldn't bother with this model, at all.

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

Holy crud,I just got back from playing a friends '82 he just got.
Played it through a Fender Hot Rod Deville.
What a sweet neck sound. The bridge wasnt anything to crow about, but we just played at low level clean.
I didnt think I could dig the low flat frets, but man o man, that thing was a true player. The feel and response were compelling..I didn't want to put it down.
Worst part is, its wine red, and in very nice shape, and would be a perfect match for the one and only "Wino", my '05 LP STD.
He said I could have it for 16.
OMG! I think I need to move some gear , i want that beast!
I told him o take care of my guitar.

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

I know conventional wisdom usually presides, and Christian is almost the bastion of this ideology hahhaha, but he's usually right....and this too.

I'd put a brand new Gibson (almost anything) over old stuff, particularly heavy and flat fretted Norlin stuff. IMO, the worst LP's I've played were those 70's/early 80's Gibsons.\
That's not to say there weren't any good Gibsons made then, but if I were spending over $1200 nowadays, my money would be on 90's + models. And I've got the most experience with Gibsons that were made from the late 80's till now. IMO, the best modern Gibsons were made from about 88 till 2001. And, I think they've gone in some new directions lately like the Traditional and P-90 models that are hitting it outta the ballpark. Today's Gibsons are totally worthy. We're in a good Gibson era right now.

I think some of you remember Gibson quality slipping around 2002 - 2007, and that's when all the Gibson bashing threads were popular, because of bad setups mostly, and sometimes sloppy binding. They got back on track quickly. So, new ones are all good from what I'm seeing.

See, at that price I'd buy one over an old one without even thinking twice about it...

I used to want an LP Deluxe real bad beause a buddy of my dad had one that was a GREAT guitar but it drove me nuts because I never found one that was a good as his was.

The large majority of old LP Deluxes are super heavy, pancake bodies, overly small necks, many of them maple, microphonic as all hell pickups, in need of refrets...and most of the time they sell for over $2149 becuase they are "vintage Les Pauls"...what a load of crap!

I'd take one of these new ones or one from the first run if reissues and be MUCH happier with it.

Re: Gibson finally brought back the LP Deluxe!

My old 75 Deluxe.

I loved the color- it wasn't as brown as in the pic- but it wasn't 'cherry,' It wasn't that heavy, but it had a really thin neck (3 piece maple) and it felt plastic-y. The bridge pickup squealed. I was happy to get rid of it- I traded it for a 74 LP Custom- 20th Anniv. The heaviest guitar I ever owned. Traded that for my 59 LP Special. I've had the Special for almost 20 years. It worked out in my favor.

I long to try these… how do you call… mini-bucker… in Les Paul. With moose and squirrel.
