Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

Not sure about any advantages, but I think an old cream white V is cooler than an Explorer. I'd like to find one for the 80's when they had the gold headstock decal instead of the "Gibson" truss rod cover.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

- Explorers - weird shape, some players complain that the big body wing is uncomfortable for their right arm when playing. If you have one onstage, you're pretty much expected to wear a black T-shirt and play metal.

- Flying V's - also a weird shape, takes some getting used to the lack of a waist, especially when sitting down. Great upper fret access. Mine sound good with hot PU's or PAF's. V's were/are played by a number of guitarists and don't look out-of-place for many genres.

Explorer you can play sitting down... Flying V doesn't need a guitar stand.... The rest is personal preference...

But why not just have both....

Blueman, you should stop generalizing about genres of music you don't listen to, let alone understand.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

The Flying V has that F*CK OFF attitude. The Explorer has that SO F*CKING WHAT attitude. What mantra do you fancy?

You've opened my eyes. I really need to be more like you. That's it, starting Monday morning, first thing 8:00, I'm taking after you. No more of my lame excuses.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

The Explorer is the most comfortable type of guitar I've ever played. It's why I fell in love with them in the first place.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

There is the memory of a brand new 1976 Korina Explorer I found in a mom-and-pop store on the Oregon Coast back in the day. I could have bought that sucker for $349, and I still kick myself over it. I suppose paying the rent was a wiser choice, but that was a damn fine guitar. They bring a fortune now. And the newer ones just don't do it for me. :(

no advantages per se, so just buy both of them like I did

I had a Destroyer and it was the most comfortable guitar to play seated. I've been gassing for an explorer for a while, hopefully I come across a decent deal soon.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I think the Explorer is a cozy body shape. I like the way it kind of wraps around you. I'm very open to getting an Explorer-shaped something in the foreseeable future.
