Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

Yeah, I couldn't come up with a power pop band with an Explorer toting guitarist. Most prominent non-metal band I could come up with was U2. Then again, I haven't take Metallica seriously as a metal band for over 25 years.

Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I dig both shapes but do not and have never owned Gibber's version of either.

Hamer Rules or Did that is.

That's a great looking V.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I've had both in the past, and bonded more with the V. It took a little more work to feel like you really had a grip on the V, but it gave excellent upper fret access. I suppose I was influenced from an early age by the image of multiple high profile V players being lead players (which I wanted to be), and thought of Explorers as being more for rhythm players, although either can do the job. In my particular case, my V definitely had more mojo. Got some great sounds on tape with it (yes, actually on TAPE back then!).

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

The V is designed to fit right around your thigh. Perfect for playing seated or standing.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

If I were to go with an Explorer, I always liked the natural mahogany colored ones the best.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I'd do a black Explorer with a white pickguard, maybe a C/59 Hybrid bridge and a Full Shred neck.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I wouldn't mind either or both. I played a Korean Hamer once (not a Slammer, step up from that) and it was pretty good, EMG 81 in the bridge notwithstanding.

I like the look of these mango wood ones from Bacchus. $799 a pop!

Bacchus is everything that's right and good about MIJ geets. I miss the one I used to have.

Those are nice!

Any love for Dean around here? I always liked the Dean Zs. People complain about the V headstock but I always thought it looked cool

I only really like the V headstock on the Cadillac. Not sure why.

are those yours??

The green and the blonde on the lower right are amazing but they are all awesome

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

If you turn an explorer upside down, and lick the bottom, during say "lick it up" it does not have nearly the panty drop factor of doing it with a V...

Thanks for the kind words. The Greenie, MGZ, is a limited edition from 2006 IIRC and the Blonde with the P90 Duncans, Victoria, is a Prototype to a very limited, only 17, run from 2005.

Upside down you say?

I like both, I've owned both, but, out of the two I'm most comfortable with an Explorer......I've been playing this one a lot lately with my latest project: www.themightyswine.com

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

I have owned a V style guitar for almost 2 decades. It does not need a stand. Mine is very light weight too. And I love that. But it can nose dive. I however love Explorers better and somewhere in the future I would love to get one.

Re: Gibson Flying V or Gibson Explorer

Speaking of Deans. How about some of the best of both worlds.
