Anyone who isn't confused really doesn't understand the situation.

Well I certainly hope Gibson are able to pull themselves out of this and keep making great guitars for starters.
Sure - their quality has been questionable in that last 10+ years
Sure - their product offer has been weird over the last 10+ years
Sure - their investment strategies into cross-branding etc failed.

But at the heart of it all is music - people still love music, and many of us enjoy making music. And I'd argue that the number of people switching from consumers to creators is growing given how easy it is to make cool stuff with software these days. And yes, this has shifted the focus of music away from the guitar, and on to the performer (general). At a similar level, live gigs are giving way to online performances - people find a bigger audience through YouTube than at the local dive bar..

So if I were involved in steering Gibson, I'd be stripping the gumph out of the product lineup pronto - limit it to Les Paul and SG Standards, Studios, and a limited number of Customs and Reissues - all in a limited number of colours (white, black, and a sunburst). Add in 1 or 2 acoustic models in a similar hierarchy. I'd then drop all other products and focus on a product that connects your Gibson guitar to your laptop/ipad/iphone (etc) and gives you a palette of completely malleable sounds/tones based on some new and old classics (ala Yamaha THR, Vox Adio, Line6 stuff), and a GUI interface to play with it all and record it, ready to layer with other sounds and upload to youtube/soundcloud/facebook/etc.

To summarize - consolidate to a core lineup, focus on music creation and its social interfaces.

Just my thoughts..

Well, we had the "government series" guitars when they were raided. I want to know who is saving up for the special run Bankruptcy series that will be coming soon?? Your $10K investment gets you a Les Paul guitar, stripped to the bare basics, (to symbolize how this ordeal shook the company to its core.) Will include a commemorative gig bag (instead of a hard case, indicating lean times) , and a $ logo at the 12th fret. Guaranteed to be a collectors item. To top of this amazing collectible set, you will also receive a signed picture of Henry J, wearing a "bankruptcy barrel", to show that even he suffered during this trying time in the companies' history..

This is awesome.

Re: Gibson gets $135M- Will they use it wisely? Can Epi save the day?

What baffles me the most: Philips sold their audio/video electronics division for them with 135$ million??!

They got the biggest, most well known brand of the industry with a pocket money? How the heck that happened and how it's possible they can't make a profit out of that to balance out the main company?

Or have I misunderstood something here?

Re: Gibson gets $135M- Will they use it wisely? Can Epi save the day?

Gibson should follow the Fender Model:
EPI like Squire...create at higher end EPI like Classic Vibe...start up a MIM Gibson and have Gibson at the top...thin out significantly the Gibson models offered and spread any PVM winners through the lower levels.

They already did all that before:

Orville, Epiphone Elitist, etc.

Re: Gibson gets $135M- Will they use it wisely? Can Epi save the day?

There is a big very dark hole waiting for them!
A company that shady hoping for something that is beyond them....
If for some odd reason they will survive this in any way, downsize is what is needed.....
That ridiculous arrogance they had before needs to go far far away and never come back!
Personally I hope they die....and badly too, they kinda had it coming.....cannot say that would make me feel sorry for them!

This industry is changing and probally faster than most would like to admit.

It is typically extremely difficult to recognize or accept a problem if one is inside....Henry J's denial
/sales up and quality never better could be a sign of this...the biggest beneficiary, from a financial standpoint, of a buy out might likely be Henry J...
