Gibson guitars with satin/matte/smooth necks?

Standard Faded - as you play them they generally come up in shine

Re: Gibson guitars with satin/matte/smooth necks?

I also prefer the non-glossy necks, as I tend to sweat a lot a my hands stick to the back of the neck on occasions. I have. Gibson Les Paul Studio Faded from 2016, it has the rounded 50‘s neck with a matte finish, I love the way it feels and plays.

From 2016 I think the Studio faded and 50‘s & 60‘s Tribute have those finishes on the neck.
From 2017 I‘ve only tried the Tribute, it‘s also matte but is a thinner neck, called the 60‘s slim taper.

To update my previous answer, I've owned two 2007 Les Paul Studios with 50's profile Glossy neck and didn't feel my hand sticking to it. I also have a 2016 LP Classic Ltd Run with a glossy 60's neck which is a dream to play.

The neck on my 2016 LP Studio Faded is matte but the finish is not completely soft nor even, so I want to sand it to make it smooth and even. Any advise on how to do that? I owned a 2012 SG Special that had a matte 50's neck, very smooth and even, best neck I've ever played on a guitar of any brand. I'd like to sand my Faded's neck to make it as close as possible to that. What do you think?

I’ve got a 2012 60’s glossy neck and I too, absolutely love it. It’s just perfect in every way.

Agree! I just want to change the surface of my Faded's neck and not the shape. Can that be done just with sandpaper? If so, which one should I use?

Without looking at it, it's hard to say for sure.

If there are raised areas you could sand it smooth, and I'd recommend 400 grit sandpaper. It'll be slow going, but you'll have the least chance of going through the finish. Maybe try wet sanding with 600 to finish it off.

If there are depressions, they'd need to be filled with additional lacquer before you start sanding.

Re: Gibson guitars with satin/matte/smooth necks?

I really want to buy some gibson guitars (Specifically an SG but also interested in Les pauls (please also recommend v's and explorers too if you know any)) but I hate the glossy and sticky necks on most of them, I know of 1 gibson guitar that comes with a satin neck which is the sg faded 2016 t, however I can't seem to find many others and I'd like to know if there are more options.

You and me both! Can't stand gloss necks. I never got round to buying an LP because of that. But there are a few - the Trad Pro (I-IV) I think had larely satin necks. Different models indicated different neck sizes, and some had satin backs and sides too (think the IV). However, I just pulled the trigger on this:

All satin, including the top.

I couldn’t give you proper advise on this. I’ve never attempted to remove the finish on a neck.
Maybe check out some YouTube vids and see if you can get some better methods.

Re: Gibson guitars with satin/matte/smooth necks?

I haven't had any issues with gloss necks across several brands. However, similar to what Bill said, whenever I get a new (to me) guitar, it gets a good overall cleaning with a guitar cleaner, the one with a 61 on it. Brain frat on the name. I do a double or even triple clean on the neck. I am also pretty religious about wiping the back of the neck with a good guitar cloth. I don't do this specifically to "treat" a gloss neck, but maybe it helps some?

I've never experienced a sticky gloss neck, even on the half dozen LP's I've owned.

From what I have read at least, the sandpaper can do damage to ur pups. Much safer with Scotchbrite. Biggest reason I wont buy an expensive guitar. I wont rub the finish off a $3000 guitar. My guitars, I have em to play. Cant say I will sell any of em

Steel wool, not sandpaper

It breaks up into little metal particles that get drawn in by magnets

The gray government series guitars all had matte finishes. My 335 is getting pretty shiny in some spots from all the playing over the last few years, but it's still smooth.
